I think there has been interest for many years now; not only for Tai Chi, but with the swordplay and the Katas. All of these, I think would be rather successful. Just a thought...
Coolwater

Yah, I agree. Still, sword and open hand katas are fast and fun to watch. Although you can do it fast, tai chi forms (open hand, sword, whip, & fan) are usually very slow to watch. My judo black belt brother-in-law refers to it as Turtle Fu.
I wonder if AP fans would buy a tai chi vid as much to learn from as to watch? It is fun to do. Like, there is a tai chi step called, "Carry Tiger to Mountain." It's one of my favorite moves, but who the hell would carry a tiger to a mountain?? And why would the tiger put up with it? And how did I end up facing this direction?;)

Yes, count me in as interested! I'd like to see what sort of form AP decides to teach.
Nancy Falconer, from the HLbb, does several forms - Yang and Chen, fast and slow, with swords and pikes, and all. The Japanese and Korean martial artists don't take tai chi seriously, but they haven't seen Nancy go slicing around. I have another friend who does a whip form; says he took that up because the only person you're liable to hurt with an inept whip is yourself. Were I AP, I think I'd teach a weaponless form at the con!

Perhaps AP's class will teach us just 'nuf to keep our yang and yin moving! When the weight is on one foot, then that foot is yang and the other foot is yin. I can see him moving like a 'cat' light.
Meditation movement.
There are some videos on youtube that draw the analogy between cutting a watermelon and practicing Tai Chi. Some more entertaining than others.

Qigong, Quigong, chi gong is good for what ails you. Chinese Medicine relies on it. Even Western Dr.'s are coming around to recommending it.
I was recently seen by a Chinese Dr. who uses your wrist pulse point to determine your overall health. Amazing how they pick up on points that took Western Dr's several appointments to come up with!
I do believe I was helped with 'Watermelon Frost' Lozenges for a smog induced case of laryngitis! As for Qigong and insomnia, it works. Anything practiced for four thousand years must be useful!
The health benefits of Qigong and Tai Chi are amazing. In the Orient every public place has people going through the movements.
Qigong is easier than Tai Chi and can be done sitting down even lying down !
Something we fast paced Westerners and Europeans could benefit from.

Poor Sam, it's a fight some days, isn't it? You'd like chi gong though; It's a comfortable exercise, and Petta's right, you can do most of the chi gong moves sitting down. And if you are a bit out of control, who's going to know? Chi gong is medicine that feels good and it will help keep you limber.
I found a bunch of samples on youtube.com, key words, chi gong, qui gong, and so on.

I am trying to find some classes here is Miami, but, I admit that it has not been easy...still looking. I think that I would prefer the Chen to start...for me it easier to do the most difficult first. I figure if I can do that, then I can do anything.

Google shows a bunch of schools in Miami. I suppose you could pick the ones nearest home or work, and then visit them. Many of them will invite you to try it out for free. Don't get discouraged.
In my case, after many years of looking, I finally found a good, more or less retired, trained-in-China teacher, and then pleaded with him to offer a class. (Please please pleeeeease???) Our sifu doesn't drive much due to narcolepsy, so I said we'd come to him. He said, well - OK, we could try that. I asked how many people he'd need to start a class, and he said that three were all that would fit in his living room... I used to know where I was supposed to be in the form, by orienting toward a painting of his mother.
Three years later the class size goes up and down, and we're in a conference center because Sifu offers the class for free to the center's employees. He makes barter arrangements for folks who can't pay cash (veggies and fresh eggs!). I still stink at it, and I am getting ready to teach Sifu how to canoe. I don't know what the Chinese word for dojo is, but I think we have one. :D

Well, I'll admit, I know nothing about Tai Chi. But I'm hoping that doing the exercises can help me clear my head and get me at least a little centered. From the time I registered for the convention until now.... everything in between has been pure hell.:( Knowing that this trip has been coming up has been the one thing keeping me going from day to day.

Poor Grape! I'm sorry things are rough right now. Well, you'll be glad you're doing the classes. Slow motion, spiraling ninja-hood feels good, and life overall will be better, too.
And don't let a little self-consciousness stop you. Even after three years, I still feel awkward and forget what I'm supposed to do next, so don't expect to be able to do it all at once unless you've taken a lot of professional dance. The good news is that with tai chi, you are a beginner for 30 years. Seriously! So if you do it for an hour or two with AP and Ms. Gracen, you are off to an excellent and unusual start!
OH! Your classes could meet the next morning before the con starts back up, and do the forms again! That's the way the Chinese do it.
 Cool I think LA gets enough earthquakes without me losing my balance and causing another one.
The closest I'll get to seeing AP doing Tai Chi is on the Highlander reruns.
OH well that's certainly better than NO AP doing Tai Chi.
But I am glad you told me the difference in the types.
It just gave me the idea to ask the grandkids Taekwando instructor about it.
Maybe he can teach some classes or knows where I can sign up for some.
If not I can use daughters pool for water aerobics.:p

Maybe they'll sell us tapes of the classes. My fingers are crossed.
When you talk to the tae kwan doh instructor, ask also about qui gong. It is specifically intended for health and can be done with less worry about balance. And as Scarpetta said (I think it was 'Petta), you can do it sitting down on bad days.
Seriously, tai chi or qui gong in the water sounds like a wonderful idea! What would the moves feel like against the pressure of the water? Got to try it!

Its wonderful! I have done and still do Kata in the pool. The resistance is great and the stress on the joints is nill. Yes, Tae Kwon Do. Ive been practicing on and off since 1974 and have earned the rank of 2nd degree Blackbelt. However, since the arthritis set in my spine, I still teach a couple nites per week (love the kiddos) but no longer compete and spar seldom. I find the "water workout" very easy on the bones, very relaxing since I do it in an indoor heated pool and much less tiring therefore I can extend my workout time with no soreness yet the resistance provides the results and helps speed movement when doing kata on land. Also, keeps me sharp in case I do ever have to defend myself or family again!:D
No heated pool for me. Heat is my enemy!!
Thanks for the tip about Tai Chi on You Tube. I usually spend Thurdays at daughter's house so I can watch the kids Taekwando Classes. Future son-in-law
might be able to help me out with some of the exercises if he gets off work early enough. The three of us are working on a sort of health kick. We give each other pointers and I'm teaching the two of them how to prepare healthier meals for their life on the go.

Can't help you, ld. There's a bunch of martial arts that fit that description. Anyone here know how to match a body up with the best martial art for her??
SAAAAAAAM!!!!!
Guess what I found at the health food store! Sitting Wu Shu!! The cover of T'ai Chi (The International Magazine of Tai Chi Chuan) has a cover story just for you. "Tai Chi Wheel Chair Olympics." I had to buy it and will send it to you if you like. A UT-Chattanooga prof, Zibin Gio, has created a 13 move form in which the wheels are the feet. The moves are many of the same ones we do in our form - you may not get to carry tiger to mountain, but you do bend bow to shoot tiger. Tiger better watch his butt.
:o LD I left you a message answering that question on the Martial Artist thread!
How air-headed am I? But in my defense I was flipping between three websites and got confused.
Cool are you sure you were in the Health Food Store and not Ben and Jerry's?:p
I'm pretty proud of me right now. I dropped 5 pounds!
I don't have to have the chair yet. I can stand and walk around but not for more than a few minutes at a time.
You know what a "Charley Horse" is. Right? Or how it feels to have your foot fall asleep? Well ...imagine that feeling throughout your entire body only magnified the more you move. Until you reach the point that it's difficult to breathe and you become dizzy. Your back feels as if it is about to snap. Then you feel as if someone started at your fingers and slowly implant red hot coals under your skin. Pain meds and muscle relaxers don't touch it.
The only relief is Cold Water. Heat and friction caused from moving muscles makes it worse.
So if I can do it in a cold pool then that works best for me.
The closest classes they have are in Tallahassee. You know how far that is from me. There just isn't enough people in this area wanting it to make it profitable...I guess.
Nope no therapist. Not since the insurance ran out. The electro shocking therapy was helpful.

Well, being in a wheelchair wasn't the point. It was that you could sit to do it.

This is a kind of myopathy, then? Frankly, it sounds like hell. No wonder you vanish every once in a while. Touching even the keyboard would hurt, huh? Is the pattern always the same? First electricity and then burning?

Oh Sam! I pray Gods healing for you. I guess I am very fortunate that our local public pool has hours reserved in the mornings and evenings for "lap swim" and "exercise". The heated pool relaxes my muscles and my joints. However, you might, if you dont have access to a public pool, think about an above ground which, unless you added a heater, would be as cool as the outdoor temp?????
Just a thought--is there no "rehab" facility nearby that your dr could prescribe pool therapy?
Does your condition not prevent you from holding down a job?? If so, could you not be eligible for disability or SSI, or as Cool suggested--Medicare?

Now back to the Tai Chi....I noticed in the pics that AP was demonstrating something which had to do with the way the hand was held.
Is that because the flexion of the hand at a certain angle is more beneficial or is he placing emphasis on the force that can be exerted?

At that particular instance, he was demonstrating the force and how the movements used and body position improved the amount of force that could be exerted. He also talked about how the positions were beneficial to overall body mechanics.
