Well Carmel is being kept busy since touching down in LA and heading to the San Diego Comic Con. She has posted a wonderful little story about travelling to the Con. And while taking care of business and hopefully also trying to enjoy the Con she has sent along some photos taken today at the WOTW signings.

First is the story it is a must read, trust me on this ;)

From Carmel:
Hi all

Just thought that I would quickly report in. Los Angeles was HOT!!! That
wouldn't have mattered all that much except for the fact that Adrian's car
has been sitting for months doing nothing whilst he gallivanted around other
continents and so it decided that it was not happy and as soon as Adrian
arrived back in LA this week from Hungary it decided that it was no longer
prepared to deliver a whole variety of normal mechanical services -
including air conditioning!

We were due to start Adrian's first session signing at Comic Con at 3pm
Thursday but repairs went longer than expected and we didn't get away from
LA until 12.15pm with San Diego some 2 - 3 hours drive! I had a rental car
which I had picked up on Wed when I arrived in LA and I needed to follow
Adrian down the Interstate 405 back to Thrifty rentals next to the Westin at
LAX.

"Stick close" were his immortal last words to me.witness an Aussie driver
who considers herself to be on the wrong side of the road on the wrong side
of the car attempting to stick like glue to Adrian's low flying machine as
he wove in and out of traffic jams and 6 lanes of traffic at the speed of
sound!! Men! I am not kidding - there were times when I reckon that I had
2" to cut in in front of various BMWs and other very highly priced cars!

I think that we did what should have been a 30 min trip at that time of day
in about 15 with me aging 10 years I suspect that there is a police alert
out for both of us. Well if I thought that THAT part of the trip was fast
you should have seen the LA to San Diego leg. At least I just had to sit in
the passenger seat with my hair on end looking like that picture of 'The
Scream' .windows down due to the lack of air conditioning ..have you ever
listened to the sound of wind when it is blowing through a car doing 500
mph?? Now add to that picture me attempting to eat some ridiculously
healthy item we'd grabbed..some tuna rice concoction which Adrian had
decided could be eaten with chop sticks. Hands up all those who have
attempted to eat grains of rice with a chop stick travelling at the speed of
sound - with the windows down..

As you would expect we made good time to San Diego but were still running
late - particularly when we hit downtown traffic (125,000 people are
attending this thing!!!)..I knew that John Farris was attending so called
him to see if he could meet us at the loading dock at the convention centre
and park Adrian's rocket..er..car.but John isn't getting in until Fri night
so (thank you John!) he gave me Andrew Modeen's phone number who rose to the
occasion and met us and took the car off our hands which meant that we could
quickly get Adrian up to the signing hall with all out our gear.

The organisation is absolutely superb - we had a team of Marines who were
assigned to us and everything went like clock work. As we got close to
Adrian's table we saw hundreds of people lined up and Adrian asked who they
were there for and was told "YOU!" - LOL!

We quickly got our stuff out on the table and spent the next 3.5 hours
meeting hundreds of delightful fans - most of whom had never seen Adrian.
Adrian has never attended one of these events so it was a very different
experience with a whole bunch of different fans. I must say that it was very
affirming for Adrian and Highlander - every person was so gracious and so
thankful to Adrian for his contribution to Highlander. We had people calling
their Mums saying "Mum!! Guess who I am standing in front of RIGHT NOW!!
ADRIAN PAUL!!" - LOL..

Adrian looked fabulous which was particularly infuriating since I looked
like something the cat had dragged in - there was no time to shower and I
still had 3 layers of storage shed grime all over me from my visit earlier
in the day to retrieve merchandise for sale. (yes we were supposed to get
into San Diego in time to freshen up.and one day pigs will fly.)

I'm sending Sue and Victoria some pictures. Adrian will be at the War of
the World Heavy Metal booth today from 1 - 4pm and tomorrow the same and
will be signing again on Sunday 11am to 3pm. Peter will be at the Heavy
Metal booth on Sunday from 1 - 4pm. I know that there are a few who managed
to get tickets so make sure you grab me to say hello.

It's wonderful to see so many people out there who truly appreciate what a
great show Highlander was and the efforts of all of those who worked so hard
to make it what it was.

Kind regards

Now after reading about Carmel's hair-raising exciting ride to San Diego with Adrian at the wheel, I'm wondering if is it NOT a coincidence that she has him posed in front of a sign that says *SLOW DOWN* in the last picture??!!

Ah Tessa - you know me too well! I must admit that I didn't see the sign in the background when I took this as we were rushing through the loading dock area with forklifts flying all around us. I raced in front and grabbed this picture and when I was looking at it last night noticed the SLOW DOWN sign and though "How appropriate!" - so I cropped the picture to make it stand out more. Of course he is insisting that he was was virtually crawling and that it was all in my imagination. He has thus far been unable to explain how we managed to get from LA to San Diego in 6 minutes! LOL

I will make sure that I get more pics today. It is such a different experience for David and Adrian - a very affirming one in relation to their work in Highlander and War of the Worlds. All of the people associated with WotW are raving about the performances of Adrian, Jim, Peter and Elizabeth - particularly as it isn't a medium that Adrian and Elizabeth had much experience in. Adrian has said that he loved doing it and would love to do more.

I strongly recommend Comic Con to fans - you will need to get in very early to get tickets but it is a great event in a great location.

It's a great picture Carmel, and in light of the *crawl* as Adrian put it, to San Diego, it couldn't have been more appropriate. Thanks for the pictures. We look forward to lots more! :) We're all so happy to hear that things are going well there and that Adrian is meeting lots of new fans, and that there are many that are seeing him for the first time in person!

Oh, I'm definitely going to watch for the 2010 tickets to go onsale. I've been reading comments on Facebook about all the vendors and panels. Gillian called it Nerdi Gras, which sounds perfect for me - a giant celebration of all things nerdy.

Great photos and an absolutely hilarious story, Carmel. :)

This reminds me of our recent cross country move to Texas, and my sister (who was in the lead) thinking that setting the car on cruise and slowing down for nothing was the way to go. When we hit the waffle iron roads coming out of Ark. into Texas that was definitely not good. As I was bump, bump, bumping over the ridges, feeling as if my brain was being jarred out of my head, my low slung bug vibrating to the beat, the next thing I knew I saw a hubcap flying down the road heading right for my windshield. I did a quick manuever and dodged and straddled it, hurriedly hitting speed dial on my cell to call my sister and tell her to SLOW DOWN! LOL!!

Carmel

As one who has tried for many years to take a picture of Adrian at a convention...and have him stand or sit totally still...I quite agree with you Carmel. He moves at the speed of light. Perhaps that sign ought to be hung around his neck instead of that Con pass?? ROFL

Thanks Carmel for pics and stories. And especially to Vic for always passing these on to us.

Another great update from Carmel

Hi all

I am currently looking out my hotel window from the 27th floor and all I can
see are thousands of fans standing in very orderly queues waiting to get
into the Convention Centre panels. They started queuing at the crack of
dawn because all the panels are on a first come first served basis (as is
everything).

The sheer scale of this event is mind-boggling. There is a HUGE Exhibition
space with every conceivable major sci fi/graphic novel/animation etc dealer
you can think of. LEGO is even here! Yesterday was a big Star Wars day and
everywhere we looked we were surrounded by Darth Vaders, Imperial Storm
Troopers etc.mind you the odd Wonder Woman and various forms of alien
wildlife wandered past as well! The costuming has to be seen to be believed
- this is no amateur put together job. I can see that people will have been
working on their costumes for many months. Kathy Johnson you would think
that you had died and gone to heaven - LOL.

John Farris called me last night and I will track him down to help with
Adrian's signings tomorrow.

The War of the Worlds booth is very popular and I must say that the trailer
they are showing is superb - the production values are everything that we
came to expect of Highlander so it is great to see that replicated. There is
a real buzz about the show and it will release in April 2010 according to
Joe Pearson.

Poor David A is hobbling around on a crutch having decided that it was a
great idea to go on a 40 mile bike ride with a bung knee! You can imagine
what we all had to say about that! I must say that standing behind Adrian
and David and listening to the playful banter is like overhearing Jagger and
Richards.both always taking charge, (playful) arguments about who is
deciding what in relation to the autograph protocol .you can see where the
creative dissonance resulted in some great end results.

What still staggers us all is the sheer number of people who know and love
Highlander and can't work out why it hasn't continued. Everyone wants to
know if Adrian is doing more Highlander and I do wonder why there isn't a
Highlander booth here. Must talk to Peter D! I guess that this is what
defines a cult show.

The funniest thing yesterday was watching Adrian signing for WotW instead of
Highlander. He was signing as his character "Patrick O'Brien" but of course
years of muscle memory had Duncan MacLeod in the muscles controlling his
right hand and I can't tell you the number of times we almost had "Patrick
Macleod/Duncan O'Brien and combinations thereof!

Kind regards

Terrific photos! Adrian looks great. Glad it was a success for him - he looked like he was having fun. I heard him talk about it on the blogradio site last night, and he seemed really surprised that so many people are still into Highlander, considering how long ago that was. In reply to the questions about PEACE at the Comic Con. PEACE was promoted through word of mouth this time as there was not enough man power to do anything separately and Adrian was kept very busy through out the weekend with his Professional commitments. He did mention he spoke about PEACE in some interviews at the Con.

Word of mouth alone will have fans looking up PEACE to find out more, especially the new fans who have never had the pleasure of meeting Adrian before and would have been taking in everything he said to them during the Autograph sessions. After all we know how it feels when you meet him for the first time, they will try to remember every word he said to them l am sure. ;)

Maybe if he attends Comicon next year, well in advance of the event he'll organize some people to man a PEACE table for the duration of the weekend. I'm sure if he asked for volunteers in enough time for people to make arrangements and see how their schedules are he'd be overwhelmed with volunteers!
