View Full Version : Tides Of War
Hi Everyone!
I saw Tides Of War just recently and thought Adrian did a fantastic job in this role. I found it so moving as Frank watched his lover die before his eyes, and his pain warring with his sense of duty, as he had to immediately return to lead his crew. I cried at the scene when he finally allowed himself to vent his grief at the poolside. I am sure that most of you have already seen it but I just wanted to weigh in with my opinion.
Peace & Light,
Gin

I agree Gin. Tides of War in its original movie form was a showcase for Adrian. Very moving portrayal of Frank Habley. One of my favorite movies.

It's a good film., and I really enjoyed the contrast with Phantom Below.

I wasn't pleased with Phantom Below because without the knowledge of the gay relationship it made Adrian's performance look too tight/wooden whereas when you had the deeper context for what he was going through the performance was in fact a powerful and deeply moving one.

I thought that in Phantom, the captain's behavior was off-balanced, and the hostility of the behavior of the new crewmen was just odd without the background of the captain's relationship with the first mate. Oh, and as one reviewer commented, it was odd that the hero didn't get the girl.
The reason I liked the contrast between the two films is that very issue: in real life, what attributions are made about a person's behavior if you don't know he's hiding his sexuality and interpersonal relationships? Exactly what happened to those two films is what happens to real lives under the US policy of "don't ask, don't tell." People become secretive, less expressive, and you never get to see the richness of their lives.
What is fun is to show Phantom to someone and then show that person Tides. There are complaints about watching an unremarkable made-for-TV movie followed by intent comprehension when the first scene starts up in Tides.
And by the way, I think The Phantom Below is the funniest, most appropriate title ever. Hadley's sexuality certainly was the phantom below!
