What to do about my car mechanic

Last year I paid a man on the recommendation of a friend to fix my car. Over a period of time I paid him over 1,000 to fix it. The car would run for a little while then have more problems after he seemed to fix it! Grrrrr! At this point I was not happy! I tried calling him to finnish fixing the car and he would or so I thought, (I know very little about cars) again it would run for a short time then quit! After several times of this occurring, I was beginning to lose my sense of humor!:mad: So now he won't return any of my calls! I'm frustrated and very angry!! I want to settle this in a diplomatic way. I could try calling him again or I could take him to small claims court. I also don't want to upset my friend. All I really want is to have my car fixed and safe for my kids!:mad::(!*@~#**@!! This has my Irish/Scottish blood boiling!

Any suggestions would help.
