View Full Version : Sheep are the new green fuel. Trust me!

G?day.

I was giving the Aston Martin Lagonda a spin this morning, top down, even though the weather in the UK is total pants! I tuned into something called BBC Radio Two. Between the hours of 7-30 and 9-30 in the morning they have this nice Irish guy called Terry Wogan giving it the raw prawn.

Strewth! The guy?s over 60 and a knight! I felt really old as I listened. The news reader did his bit on global warming and stuff and then he mentioned that the old capital city of England was converting it?s busses to run on sheep?s urine to cut down global warming.

Are you kidding! I was glued.

It appears that by spraying the emissions of a diesel engine with sheep?s urine carbon emissions are reduced to a much lower level.
The urine is collected by the fertiliser industry from farmyard waste and refined into pure urea, which is then sold on to be used in the green engine technology. BONZER!
Ammonia from the urea reacts with nitrous oxides in the exhaust fumes and converts them to nitrogen gas and water, which is released as steam.

Blimey! I?d imagined some great hunk of a guy squeezing the poor jumbuck into the gas tank! Or even several sheep on board being given great quantities of the amber nectar and someone percolating the by products direct into the engine.

I?ll say this to the Pom?s, they may have strange ideas like moving their capital city from Hampshire to London but when you consider the amount of sheep us Aussies have they take the bloody bisquit.

Perhaps they should coin a new phrase. ?Go to work on a sheep.?

By the way, Winchester is by far a nicer place than London.

Since all urine has urea in it, I'm guessing they can do this with other animals too or even us...now there's a thought. Interesting...LOL

G'day Magic Princess and congrats on your struff.
You know I thought about that. But it appears that sheep seem to have the edge. Whilst cattle maybe fed on alternative substances it seems sheep have the ability to turn that grass into something far more beneficial. It's been proven that sheep dung is far better at providing nitrogen for the soil than the stuff that cows chuck out.
Now I know the UK is turning fields of oil seed rape into an alternative fuel to oil and the methane taken from cattle into automotive fuel but the inovation of reducing the CO2 level by spraying the exhaust gasses is totally new to me. Say goodbye to NOX.

Mind I do have one problem! That is this. Whilst cattle are used to being put in sheds for milking etc sheep are far more at home roving about on the hills eating grass. Does this mean the loss of freedom for the sheep?

Whilst human excrement is also turned into methane and usually burnt off during the process of purification it was said by the Victorians that peeing into your bathwater helped prevent dry skin. Now I don't think having a sheep in the bathroom would go down to well with most people, except the Welsh!

Ok so I have 2 comments:

1. Melony, unfortunately your concerns about the treatment of sheep is probably a very real issue. Yet look at how we treat cattle, chickens, pigs etc. for our own uses. It will end up being a trade off at some point: If this becomes world wide then money and greed will get involved and unfortunately those people won't give a damn about the sheep or the environment. How far will we be willing to allow mistreatment to help slow the decline of the environment? Just something I thought about and thought I would ramble about it. LOL.

2. Am I missing something about Wales? LOL. Do the Welsh like sheep? Does it smell there? I don't get it. I'm just a good ole Texas girl...I need explanations. :)

G'day Magic Princess,

As far as your question on Wales. I suggest you ask Stephy about the Welsh and their love of sheep! I believe she has Welsh parents.
I've heard that men from Montana have much the same affection. Mind as I've never met a man from Montana I can't comment.

Oh heaven! I can just imagine the increases in cancer from breathing sheep urine! No doubt the researchers will test it on women first! (Sorry folks, Im still mad about giving women a supposed medicine from horse urine!)

G'day or it was until I searched up this thing.

Why do 8 million women ingest horse urine?

Derived from the urine of pregnant mares, Premarin is peddled by a pharmaceutical multinational as a panacea for menopausal women. Illustrating a classic nexus of ecofeminist issues. Heh they don't have to take the stuff!

Did you know that synthetic estrogen is a known carcinogen? Did you know that this popular drug entails the slaughter of thousands of baby foals?

Did you know that most estrogen prescribed for menopausal women comes from the urine of pregnant mares?

Reported questions from a report in 1994. Maybe we've come on since then?

Now isn't this a touchy subject to come across? I don't think I'll go there.

Very interesting Melony. And HRT is so common now...hell my mom is taking HRT meds. I'm sure we have come a long way since 1994 otherwise you'd have PETA making a big stink about it. Not that they aren't already knocking down the doors of pharmaceutical companies anyway.

Well if you read the ingredients of face creams, hand creams, cleansers, etc., it nearly all contains urea from one animal or another but mostly monkeys.

I've got a mental picture of a farmer weeing a sheep as opposed to milking a cow - hmmmmmm thats sounds fun (esp for the sheep)!

Now if they could find a use for dog-do-do I'd be quids in. I feel like I'm up to my armpits in th stuff at the moment.

Me too, Lt. Mac. In addition, every woman Ive known to take the stuff has ended up with breast cancer. I realize that not all women have problems with the meds but its still scary!:(
