View Full Version : Just how big is your Dawwwwwg!

G?day.
Don?t you just love Dawwwgs? No I can?t honestly say I do. Not that I?d do them any harm of course. I prefer the independence of a cat myself.
But can you imagine my surprise as I drove the Aston through Lincolnshire today when I saw this thing standing at the front gate of a house.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b278/velvetgloves/1038111.jpg
Beware of the Dog! Are you kidding! This is more like a small horse!
But despite his size, owners Ray and Julie Woods say he?s a big softy. Strewth! I wouldn?t like to meet him on a dark night.
Julie told me: "People are often intimidated when they first see Samson because he is about the size of a pony. But he is so gentle - he loves being patted and is very affectionate." I suppose that?s good then? But what if he took a dislike to someone?? I said.
?Well,? she replied, ?as he stands 6ft 5inches on his hind legs I suppose he?d drown you in saliva.? I can think of better ways to go! ?And where does he sleep?? I asked. She smiled back at me and said, ?Anywhere he damn well likes!?
Samson's 29in neck means he has to have a custom-made extra large collar. He weighs in at 270 pounds. His paws are almost the size of dinner plates and he can hold a full-size football (soccer ball to all you State Siders) in his mouth. I suppose he throws the ball and you have to get it!
The couple bought Samson from an RSPCA rescue centre when he was six months old. They spend ?60 ($120) a month on grub, and Ray takes him for four two-mile walks every day. Now I reckon it?s the other way round. He takes Ray. And just think of the size and the amount of carrier bags he has to carry! Ewwwwwww!
Ray said: "The looks on people's faces when I take him out on his walks is priceless."
Now I don?t mean any offence by this next remark. But I had a vision! A vision of Sampson being trained as a guide dog. Can you imagine this thing in a florescent yellow coat, strolling nonchalantly down the road leading someone? I reckon they?d have no trouble crossing the road or a motorway for that matter.
So if you?re looking for a guard dog that won?t bite the crooks but flatten them look no further, Samsons the one.

Well holy crap...Yeah I'm not much of a dog person either (even before I found out I was highly allergic to them). It's not that I'm afraid of them, but I understand that they are animals and could very well do some damage even if they are someone's pet. This dog on the other hand...scares the crap outta me! LOL. No thank you :P

Credit where credit is due. Two mighty fine animals! Now I don't want to put the mockers on anything but I reckon you've done so well to keep that dawwwwg of yours for 13 years. Great job. Long may he live, well both of them.
But! lets face it! Samson could make 3 of yours, LOL. I think I'll start collecting plastic bags for you right away. You can PM me with your address and I'll send you some.

But I think you find that with most big dogs, the bigger they are the more friendly they are. They dont have as much to prove as little yappy dogs. This is my little yappy dog - Tess, she's a Standard Yorkshire Terrier, only she's not really yappy, a bit noisy and she cetainly lets Charlie know his place in the pecking order

WOW, how did you teach them to use a plastic pail and a shovel - could you teach mine that trick!
:eek:OK VG That is one HUGE dog. I'm a dog lover but even I would be intimidated by a dog that size. My dog Coco wouldn't though. She weighs 10lbs soaking wet. She's 14 and a half years old and she's a champagne blonde miniature toy poodle. She has a really bossy spoiled attitude and has sent many a huge dog and a few horses along their merry way. I have two labs at nearly 100 lbs each so I love big dogs! Funny story: in college I used to drive a Volkswagen beetle. I was leaving the campus one afternoon and stopped at the red light. Now you must remember that in the dino days the beetle did not have air conditioning, therefore, I rode with all the windows down. Some movement on my left side caught my eye and as I turned to look I came face to face with the huge head of a great dane!! Needless to say, I nearly wet myself but couldn't move because the lite was still red. I spoke to the dog in a very calm voice and, with tail wagging 100 mph, he proceeded to give me a very,VERY sloppy kiss!! I happened to look in my rear view mirror to see my English professor laughing her head off at my predicament!! I did, however, receive an A on my next writing assignment, "What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you".
Think it was a set-up???--lololol:D:cool:
:)Thought I'd share a few facts about dogs with you all. Did you know that dogs are great judges of character. If you find yourself in the prescence of an unknown dog you should stand completely still ,show no fear and let them sniff you. Never make loud noises or sudden movements. When reaching to pet a dog you should not reach out with your hand palm down or try to pat their head. To a dog this is a sign of aggression and you are more likely to get bit. The safest way is to slowly extend your hand palm up and let the dog come to it. Start with scratching underneath the neck and move gradually to the ears. Also a dog will only reveal their stomach to someone they trust so if you come up on one that immediately rolls over for tummy rubs then you can be sure you aren't in any danger of being bitten. The only time a dog bites is when they are hungry,in pain or feel that their environment is being threatened. If a dog eats rare meat they will develop a taste for blood and won't hesitate to bite for it. These tips were passed on to me by Vets and dog trainers. BTW there are a lot of great looking pooches here. And Fi I'd be happy to teach you how to post pics if you need any help.

We are animal lovers in our family. We had a mini ranch (1 acre+) and had an assortment of them. I was always raised with dogs, no cats until we lived there and boy did they come in handy with mice, etc.
My daughter always said there was so such thing as too large of a dog UNTIL Cullen, our neighbors Irish Wolf Hound appeared. He is a very friendly sort of fellow, comes running over to get "love" and throws his body into you to be petted. Well at 5'2" the "dog" was almost as tall as us when he was standing on all four legs. When he jumped when he was excited........well !

OK my brother wanted me to post a pic of his dog  He's so proud of her. LOL. She's a mix, but we're not real sure what. We were told by the person who gave her to us she was a Healer Akita mix, but we're not certain. She does have a tendency to try and herd us into various places in the house. LOL. To me her face looks more like a Shepherd mix. Anyway, as much as I dislike dogs, she really is a very beautiful dog. LOL.

Pepe.
That dog of yours is very cute. But like Melony I'm a pussy person. I'll have to sort out a couple of pictures of my old pussy. I have him on file somewhere.
Unfortunately Deano died ages ago and we couldn't replace him.
Now he reached 17 before he popped his white furry clogs. He was brought up with dogs and thought he was one. So he showed no fear. He even got the better of a Doberman. Deano approached him all charming like and the dog didn't like it one bit and went for him. My pussy left marks down his face as long as you like. Mind he hated other pussies.
I can still see him in my minds eye taking swallows out of the air just for the fun of it.

Did you see the Walt Disney Movie--Dogs and Cats???
The Cat in your picture looks something like the Cat that planned to take over the world! LOL! Love her--don't get me wrong... problem is--every single Persian cat I see reminds me of that cat--
They dressed the poor puss in clothing at the end--was hillarious! It reminded me that I use to irritate all of my cat's when I was a child because I didn't play with dolls--I dressed and redressed my poor felines!
I have a picture of my current Cat--a tiger female--somewhere or other--It's no longer on this computer because Jack keeps taking it into his head to reformat my hard drive and each time more and more pictures go missing...
When I have a chance to scn a few pictures in I will. I must warn you, however...this current cat looks like she is always angry--not sure if it's because of pepe the Papillon always hogging all the attention, or the fact that she is 15 years old and achy....

I completely missed this thread.
I have 4 cats, but I LOVE my dog.
we have a rescue named Lucky, because he was thrown out of a moving car with 2 other puppies and he was the only one that survived. He was skinny and he wasn't fed. But he is the best dog, he is great with my family, but we do have to watch him when anyone comes over to our house, he is very protective of 'his' property.
I don't have updated pics of him but here his is as a puppy, he is just bigger now, same coloring.

This first pic is of one of the small dogs I own.
The next pic will be of the husky I rescued from a boarding kennel I worked at. The husky had bit at the owner of the kennel. Therefore the husky rescue group wouldn't take her. Owner of the kennel was going to put her down.
You know how animals seem to pick their owners in some instances. Well I guess that was me. I already had 7 or 8 dogs at the time. Didn't really need another at that time...but she was only 4 years old. She is now 9 1/2 years old. And to this day has never bit me. One can only wonder what her life was like when young. Huskies have a rep for getting out of fenced yards and running. Part of the fenced area I have is only 4 foot high. She has never tried to leave. Also the first time she saw me and I saw her at the kennel. She went on and on in husky talk to me like she had known me forever.

Hi all
The point is not always in the size of the pet. I for one have an american pitbull (sorry, i'm not sure in the spelling), she is not huge, but seems extremely vicious for passers-by when walking out, though she is really kind and intelligent. In our country there is a company in massmedia against such dogs as pitbulls, staffteriers, rotties and the like. There were some incidents when such dogs bit the owners or their children. But it depends not on the breed, but on the upbringing, doesn't it?

There was some lughead up here in Wisconsin that did that with 3 Labrador pups. The pure babes were even nicked by a car, but by some miracle a more attentive driver pulled over to the side of the road and checked what was in the dark hefty bag.
The really senseless part in all of this was that the pups were found on the road that was only two streets down from the humane society who would have taken the pups in.....
Last evening was rather trying for me--got home from work and found that not only hadn't pepe eaten his treat I left for him that morning, but he had been throwing up. I gave him something mild to ease his stomach but his symptoms presisted. He became very restless, started to whimper and was panting like crazy.
I took him to the Vet this morning--early--and they think he might have a urinary infection--at least we are crossing our fingers that that is all the tests will show--an obstruction would be very bad.
I am running on about an hour and a half of sleep--and no news from the vet for another hour or so.....

Yes, Rivola...I think the upbringing of a dog is key--especially with these breeds. I think the need to ban or outlaw these breeds stem more from the fact that more owners of these dogs are negligent in the upbringing--when a small child or a person's life hangs in the balance sometimes people panic--we try to destroy what we fear.
Perhaps the better thing to do would have been to demand the owners of these breed attend a class that would imform and train them on the proper way to treat there animals...of course, something like that would have to be policed....

There are such classes, but they are voluntery. But most of the owners of fight breeds are quite sane people. The problem is that owners of smaller dogs or even dogless people are rather hatefull or careless and provoke accidents themselfs by shouting, kikcking or letting their small dogs to come to fighters too close. Almost every evening i have to face a typical situation: some small leashless thing barking and jumping on my dog while its owner is 15 meters away, so not to let my girl bite the intruder i have to hold her firmly and deflect the attacks, sometimes in quite a rude way cause it won't stop. When in the end the owner comes i together with my dog turn out to be "evil creatures".
Well, don't mind in fact, it's just my sore point.

Let us know how it goes with the vet and I hope everything is alright!
I certainly hope everything goes alright with Pepe. I agree that it isn't the breed but how they are raised by the owners. Unfortunately here the owners of those breeds raise them for dog fights and then leave them around areas unsecured from the public and the two mixing ends up in tragedy. Our animal shelter puts down countless dogs each year that have been starved and injured by these people using them in that way. Alot of people think it's OK to have babies and toddlers around a dog but if that child frightens or accidentally hurts that dog, it's gonna bite. Some dogs will even become jealous of the attention the child gets and bite. My grandson almost lost an ear when he was a toddler because his parents were visiting friends who had house pets and he was just learning to walk and he fell near the dog. It snapped him and it took 12 stitches to fix it. The dog had never bitten anyone before and my grandson is afraid of dogs because of it.

Thanks Aniviel and coco....Pepe's problem wasn't as simply as a UT--he had developed Kidney stones and they moved down into her bladder. He was in so much pain because he was trying to pass about seven of them. He went into surgery this morning and came through just fine. I will be bringing him home tomorrow.

I have had situations--two of them--where I was walking my smaller dog--and had larger dogs run after them and try to bite them--in both cases the animals were not on leases... I think it is just wise for all pet owners to restrain their dogs--and like in your case Coco--it would have been better for the owners of that dog to have kept him away from small children--like you say--if an animal is hurt it can often strike back without think--even the very friendly and mild manner...

that is such a true statement
Lucky was so scared and yet sweet and small when we got him, but as he grew became so protective of us. I would've bet my life that he would never bite anyone. Then a neighborhood kid came over and he didn't like the kid and he bit him because he didn't know him.
Now I never let kids come by his face even in the dog park where he is the most comfortable.
:DI'm so glad to hear that Pepe is going to be alright. Do any of you get really aggravated when you take your pup somewhere and he barks at someone and they bark back. Even adults do it and it makes the dog so anxious and aggravated that they want to tear into that person. And dog thefts are a common every day occurrence here. We have had people actually attempt to snatch her from us while we were holding her. One person reached into the car to snatch her and she bit the stuffing out of him.:D Hubby and I had a disagreement once and it ended with him saying if I didn't like it I could leave...well most of you know me and that's what I did. However the second night went when I didn't come home so when Hubby woke up the next morning Coco had left a surprise in his shoe:rolleyes::D. Well Hubby no longer tells Mom to step and Coco hasn't left anymore surprises as long as Mom calls her every night she's away from home to tell her it's ok and when she'll be back home.

Yes LOL - It always seems the bigger they are the dafter they are - bit like men really LOL
Bling Bling! Inappropriate sexist post!!!!!! LOL.
I was bought up with small dogs. Jack Russells. Sad to say my Grand parents weren't to well off as you'll see in a mo. Grand dad Russell couldn't afford vets fees, so when it came to docking tails he bit them off. Even so the dogs loved him.
As a coal delivery man living in Warwickshire he worked his dogs. The following picture shows him at Henley In Arden carnival. The float, Henley Ratting Club.
I'm told that on the morning of the carnival the gang went down to the stock market and caught the rats! All 500 of them.
Life was so simple in those days. I never met him. He died walking home from the pub along the railway track. A train took his head off as he lay drunk between the lines.
As an apprentice gas fitter I occassionally went to Henley and was amazed at the amount of older people that remembered him.
He was born near Polesworth Staffs and always worked either with coal or on the railways whilst gran worked on lace making.

Hmmmmm prooving my point there aintcha VG!
Ena, she's adorable. Pics definitely worth waiting to see.
She my little baby although she no longer lives with me she moved in with my mum as I got a complainted about her barking of a night time. and the letter from the council was basically sort it out or we will type thing. I was so upset. She never barked that much and when she did it was only becuase she could hear people banging about till really late at night and I being the good neighbour and understanding that I was bound to get noice being a flat I didnt complain about them although I wish I did. Is that mean and bitter. Although they have gone now so its fine. She like nothing more that curling up on your lap and sleep or playing ball. The pics where her really posing naturally.
:(Ena that is so sad that you can't have her with you but at least she has a wonderful family member taking care of her and you can visit her. Can't stand living in an apartment (flat). Always someone in your business and trying to make misery for someone else. I love my privacy when it comes to home life.;)
That true but it's not to bad espeically now the noicey ones have gone I've got no problems. At least I still get to see my little one when I want toand it is so qute when I pull up and see is looking out of the window as though she is waiting for me
:DShe is waiting for you Ena. They are such an intelligent breed. Does yours like to play leapfrog? (a game where your dog runs and jumps high over another dog or object.) Our neighbors had one that was always doing that to Coco and it would have her totally confused.:p
Oh yes she definately plays leapfrog she is always jumping over things and then running around like a mad almost knocking you over
:DEna she sounds like such a wonderful pup. She will be great company for your Mom.

what happened??

I said in an earlier post that dog fighting was really bad around these parts. Well I think by now you have all heard that Micheal Vick of the Atlanta Falcons has been charged along with two others for the offense. Since then there have been three other groups of people busted for it. The last was in Tallahassee, Florida where they found 32 pit bulls :eek:YES 32. Chained with heavy duty chains to trees. Starved (we are talking absolutely no food or water), cuts in their necks from the chains and many seriously wounded from fighting. These dogs were kept on a two and a half acre lot. Interviews with neighbors were done. NONE claim to know of the dogs existence there. To those claims I say B******T!!:mad:There's NO WAY those people didn't hear those poor dogs!! Any way because of their ages some of the dogs will be adoptable so if any of you are interested in giving a good home to a pit bulldog they are being held at the Tallahasse Animal Shelter. Here's the link to the story: http://www.wtxl.com/Global/story.asp?S=6859344&nav=menu594_2

Coco--the whole dog fighting/ animal torture sport that seems to be enjoyed by so many in this country is past barbaric--and show just how desensitized some individual can be...
I am so disgusted it--and not in the least surprised that these cowards that do these things are so willing to feircely insist upon there lack of knowledge.
They lack knowledge when it comes to compassion and doing what is right--but the evil being done every day to animals just because they are believed to be inferior is a knowledge I am glad is out in the open so it can be dealt with properly.
And these people should be very happy to know I won't be one to appoint their punishment because they would not like being treated in the same fashion as she treated there canine victims....
:(I agree with you Pepe.I'd like five minutes alone with each of them cause well... can't say it here but you know what I'm thinking and it's anything but pretty except for the color red. But if there is a Hell, well then I hope there is also a special place a lot deeper and a lot hotter for people like this and that they roast like a rotisserie chicken for eternity!!! I also think that people who know about it or participate in it are just as guilty as the owners.
