Sometimes roaming around the IMDB.com site is a good idea!
Two years ago, AP made a film called "Tides of War" for "Here! TV".
Later it was revised for non-gay audiences and re-titled, "USS Poseidon: Phantom Below".
Here is now offering the original, Tides, as a freebee to people with US mailing addresses. If you want a copy of the original -and much better-version of the film, go for it.
http://www.heretv.com/freedvd
I have e-mailed them asking if non-us mailing addresses can get in on this.

It is great that so many of Adrians fans are going to be able to see the movie the way it should be watched. The "family" version really misses a lot of points because of the missing scenes. Some of it does not make sense unless you have seen the full version and know what is missing.
What is everyones opinion of the family version, whether you have seen the full version or not as yet. If you have ordered the free DVD make sure you also come back and tell us what you think. It would be interesting to see if opinions change after watching the two different versions.
I personally enjoy the full version and the story flows a lot better. Little things like why the female has such hostility against Adrians character(Cmdr Habley).
I look forward to hearing everyones views on the movie.

I have seen both versions. I agree with you, Victoria, that the non-"family" (original) version flows better and the relationships between the characters make much more sense, but I am very, very happy to have the "family" version as well. Yes, it's a shallow reason, really, but then, "Shallow is the new Deep" according to George (Ellen Muth's character) on Dead Like Me. The scenes that replaced the nude pool scenes in the "family" version were just wonderful. The most gorgeous man on the planet jumps into the pool, swims the length in just in just a few strokes, turns and swims back and we get to watch him from an underwater vantage point. We also get to watch him effortlessly climb out of the pool. Very yummy stuff for us fans who would consider it a treat to watch him read a phone book, and well worth the price of the DVD, IMHO.;)

Nora thank you for the reminder. I can not believe l forgot about that wonderful pool scene. Now l must go and watch it again :) and then l will have to watch the full version just so l do not miss out on anything.
:)I was critically ill at the time of it's release but one of the really wonderful ladies here in the fandom made a copy of the original and sent it to me.NOW THAT WAS A REALLY FANTASTIC GET WELL PRESENT!!! And I'm doing much better now so ...What can I say??:D The pool scene with Bruce Willis in "The Color Of Night" had nothing on the pool scene in this one and that one didn't leave ANYTHING out!! Oh yeah and the rest of the movie was pretty good too. I didn't get to see the family version but my sis who did told me it was pretty good but a little hard to follow and that the original was much better.

Now that it's mentioned, I did wonder why the sister seems to so dislike Adrian's character. Now it makes more sense I guess. I am anxiously awaiting my copy of the originals Tides to arrive. Hate to miss any scenes that Adrian is in.

Hi Everyone!
I'm pretty new to the forum and so far I've really enjoyed all the info I've gotten.
Damemehri, Thanks so much for the link to HereTv. I contacted them and I'm waiting for my copy of Tides of War. I've never seen the family friendly version, but sounds like the original version is much better.
Also, don't forget that SciFi (US) is going to air The Source on Sept 15th. Really looking forward to that one.

Has anyone gotten the DVD from Here! TV? I signed up for it I think a couple of months ago and haven't heard or seen a darn thing.
Could it be I'm just impatient or has no one else received theirs either?

:) I certainly liked the original version of Tides rather than the PC version. I personally saw no adversion as Adrian was playing the part of a gay man. His emotions over the loss of his lover were absolutely tear jerking or at least to me. This was just one of the many roles Adrian has played that prove to me just how great an actor he is.

MagicPrincess, I just order it a couple of weeks ago, so I can't be much help. I just hope that Here! really is going to send out copies of Tides of War,
I would like to see the original. I'm sure of the movie would make more sense then.

I thought that Tides was good, although you kind of have to wonder about the Koreans being cast as villains when they're defending their own coast. But the effect of the "Don't ask, don't tell," theme was well played out, and ought to make people rethink the policy - if we can get them to watch it. Phantom was not as good. You find yourself trying to figure out what you've missed. It's the least important half of the film.
The name Phantom Below totally cracks me up, it's so appropriate!;)
:(I haven't gotten mine yet either Magic Princess but I'm thinking maybe they had so many to send out that that is why it's taking so long. I hope they had enough copies...
Coolwater, what part of Georgia?? Could those bad little bow-wows be the same ones that my favorite reptiles turned into Gator bait last year?? Looking forward to it this year too. (my daughter's the Dawg fan here.)

I have my Tides of War" in vhs format-someopne made it for me.
Hey Mary Alice-fancy seeing you here.
What's the difference from the Phantom" title from the Tides of War" title-any??

Big difference, Renate. The storyline for Tides of War is that a sub comander and his vessel meet up with a Korean sub with a cloaking device, and they're fired upon. His first mate bravely puts a resulting fire out, but his lungs are scalded by the hot air and he dies.
The twist is that the Captain and the First Mate are gay partners and have been for years, sharing a home and a social life that they cannot admit to the Navy. When the Mate is killed, the Captain can't grieve publically, and the Mate's Navy personnel sister is very hostile to him. Another twist is that the Mate was the only other person to see the sub before it cloaked, so the Captain's witness is now dead, and he is accused of incompetance, and relieved of his command.
What will happen next???
You'll have to wait and see. ;)
Phantom Below turns the gay storyline into a phantom. (Like, "Phantom Below the Waist!") It vanishes almost completely, leaving behind only some puzzling behavior on the part of the Captain and the Sister that makes you feel like you've missed something. Well, (shrugs) you have: half the movie, in fact.
I much preferred Tides, but if you're offended by male-on-male hugging and kissing, or if you're offended by the idea of AP participating in it, then stick with Phantom. Those of us who aren't, thought Tides was pretty hot!

I have not seen Tides but i have seen Phatom and while the question remains unanswered as to why the sister is so hostile she comes to her senses later on.
Adrian likes to protray characters that are different and he seems to consider every option when he protrays one. I think Tides will answer many questions and give us all a different look to a vert versitle man.
Peace

Tides is truly the better version of the film and I don't understand why they released the other version. The gay parts of the film were well done and not in the least offensive (even to an old woman like me). I thought that the way the two actors portrayed their relationship might actually help people understand how a gay relationship could be long term and based on love and caring for one another. At least it showed that to me. They helped tell the story and made sense of the movie. My feeling at the time was that other movies were released with major actors doing gay scenes, why did they make an issue of releasing a so-called family version that was not nearly as good a movie? This movie again shows the true range of emotions and acting skills that Adrian is capable of. He took a real chance and did a extremely good job of it. The things to be criticized in this movie were things beyond his control.
I also am still waiting on the DVD.
(Quote :Coolwater: Gators eat boogers!)
:eek:NAAHHH That chomp-slurp noise you heard was just one of those Gators biting the nub off one of those bad little bow-wows.:D
Tides is a good movie very tastefully done. It didn't go overboard (pardon the pun) on anything. It gave a fair representation of gay military relationships and incorporated it well with mission at hand. The way it balanced the two within the storyline is something you rarely see done well.

(slaps forehead) Dang! And all this time I thought bulldogs had short tails because they'd been docked!
If you haven't read AP's newsletter comments about being a tall person wandering around a real sub ... oh, OK, I forgot who I'm talking with. Of course you've read them; what am I thinking? Apologies!
But anyway, I sent the article (with permission) to my older brother. He taught nuclear submariner-ing for the US Navy for a while, and agrees with AP about the low bulkheads. He said that he left the imprint of his forehead on any number of bulkheads!
He also said that iwas getting into some very strange literary spaces, but we won't worry about that!

Received mine on Friday, so I had a big Adrian Paul weekend, with Seance, Tides of War, and some Tracker.
Spoiler...
I had to laugh at the end of Phantom below (now that I've seen the original) you see Adrian walking away with letters, which he was never given. I never noticed that when I first watched Phantom. Now it's really obvious that he's holding something. Even with his hand behind his back for the hand shake.

Whoohoooo! Got mine today too! Too bad I'm too tired to do anything but sleep. LOL. Looks like it'll have to wait till the weekend :(
On watching Tides again I noticed something that I had totally missed before. After the Captain is released and the ship turned back over to him and the phantom sub is hit, he says "And that's endgame!" Did anyone else pick up on that, or is it my imagination? When I heard it, I nearly burst out laughing, but I did not reverse to check to be sure that is what he said.
And it was great to revisit with a real DVD copy and not a taped off the air copy. I say "Thanks, Here."

I want to first thank Damemehri for turning us all on to HereTv's offer. I had my doubts about HereTv actually sending as Free dvd, but they really did! So those of you still waiting hang in there.... it will come ;)
My husband and I both watched Tides of War last night and we both really enjoyed it. Of course I knew I would love watching Adrian Paul in a lead role but was surprised that my husband was interested in watching it as well. He was never really into Highlander much. The movie was great, reminded both of us of "Crimson Tide". Adrian was great, the pool shot was heavenly ;) :D.
I've never seen the family version, so I can't make a comparison opinion but I can see if you take certain sections out it just wouldn't flow right. I was really impressed with the whole movie and Adrian performance was great. Look forward to seeing his other movies where he is the lead, like Eyeborgs, The Heavy and of course the Source..........looking forward to Sept 15th :D

A reply to all: I am beyond proud to be a member of this group and to know each and every one of you. It is such a joy to read the comments about this film and the subject matter, AND the difference between the 2 versions of the film from such beautiful and open-minded people. As a straight woman who champions gay rights and am comfortable with gays, I don't fit neatly in most of society's pigeonholes...it's nice to see such a level-headed discourse on the subject by such diverse folks.
Regarding "Phantom Below"....I haven't watched my DVD yet, but I think I will in a bit...I am sure from everyone's comments that "Tides of War" HAS to be the superior film. I saw "Phantom" with my military-knowledgeable ex-husband and I enjoyed it more than I thought, he enjoyed it too, but neither of us understood all of the other characters antipathy for Hubley...I look forward to a version of the film that makes sense in terms of characters.
Anyway, rock on Highlander fans-I'd consider it an honor to march into hell with you, you magnificent b******s!!:D

Did anyone else watch the docu about the making of this movie? I found it very refreshing to hear them talking about how gay characters should be portrayed on film. . Its a long while since I saw it but I remember the director (I think,) saying a person's sexuality should be no more significant, when it comes to the job they do, than the colour of their hair.
I think the movie had its faults, but it was great to see a gay male couple portrayed in this way instead of the "camp", fluffy and overly effeminate steriotype we so often see.
:DWhy yes Coolwater I suppose you could say that. It just wasn't up to par. Something was definitely missing.
Cbass, I believe that we are all searching to find and define who we are in some way or another. And I don't believe I have the right to judge anyone else's choices.

Our Woman Loving Man played a GAY MAN???????????????? I saw Tides of War but didn't know there was another version. I guess I saw the Family version? There was nothing remotely gay about any of it except I saw what relationships mean between men who are together alot on a ship. They were best friends and people can be true friends like that without being called Gay.........
I hope my opinions do not offend anyone.....It is just my opinion on this movie. I cannot picture our SEXY, WOMAN KISSING man playing a part like that.........

10-06-2007, 04:20 AM
Adrian Paul is an actor; don't you think he's good enough to convince an audience that he is a gay man grieving for his spouse? I saw Tides and I think that you might find the opening swimming pool scene startling or even repugnant. (I thought it was pretty sexy, and I'm a straight woman.) Even so, keep watching. Pretty soon all that will matter to you is that this man has lost his life's partner, is in pain, and taking the blame for something that is not his fault. You'll be totally sympathetic, I promise.

10-06-2007, 06:03 AM
ohh-it's just a movie-I don't think that Adrian would ever do that.:)

;) Sharon you no doubt saw the family version. No one is saying the characters are gay. The first scene of the original version is a gay love scene. And I agree with Coolwater that if you sit and watch it in it's entirety you will see that all that mattered in the end was that he lost someone he loved a great deal and he was later cleared of any wrong doing.
 OH yeah and I am STILL waiting...

Thanks Ladies......
I hope I did not offend anyone with my opinion. Mr. Paul is a Most Excellent actor and person and of course, can convince anyone of anything when it comes to movie making. Yeah, he is that good.:)
The swimming scene was just that in the version that I saw and I could tell he was thinking hard on something, but I wondered why until I saw the entire movie. It was most excellent and I guess I should try to find the "other " version and watch it, too??? Maybe try HereTv???
If it helps, I am friends with a couple of gay men and we talk and sometimes take a break outside at work. We talk about his weekend or whatever......
I truely do sympathize with the loss and pain....
c'ya,
Sharon:):)
;) YEP Perry, Phantom Below is the family version and Tides Of War is the gay version. Both are good but Tides Of War is the better of the two. Sharon I'm surely not offended I just didn't want to leave you confused about the difference in the two movies.;) A lot of us fans weren't sure we wanted to see our favorite leading man as a gay man, but AP does such an excellent job in that role.

Well, I was really bad. I have an email address in NC and one in NY and got a copy from HERE at both. I also have a copy that my son made for me when it aired as he has a dish and could get Here. Erom what documentary? Being on this web site is draining my funds:D I have to have everything.
HERE evidently showed a documentary on the making of Tides some time after the first showing of the movie. I only heard about it after it was aired and my son was never able to find it in order to tape it for me. He is thoughtful, but HERE is not one of his regular viewing stations. I had hoped that it would be on the DVD from HERE, but it is not. I know that some people saw it and have copies of it, but I have not been able to get one. And since I do not have access to HERE.............. Well, you get the idea. I have no knowledge of whether it was shown more than once or not.
 EROM since you have both copies...can you tell me if there is anything different on the copy from Here than what aired originally??
I do not think that there is any difference, but I can't swear to it. I have not watched them close enough together to determine for sure. I am in the midst of a major remodel and do not have access to my DVD player at the present. I'm sorry not to be of more help. As I said, I don't remember a major difference. Of course I think the quality is better on the HERE DVD.
:D Thanks EROM. I know that most dvd's now have some extra stuff added and I was wondering if that was the case. Good Luck with the remodeling!;)

Re: Tides of War. I know I'm late but that's me. I just watched this movie twice. I received it free in the mail from this site (?) It was a great movie. In fact, I think it is one of his better movies. I'm so mad that I didn't get the family version with the scenes of him swimming in the pool! I'm like the comment above that said I'll watch him in anything even reading a phone book! But this really is an excellent movie. I'm glad they made it into a family version so everyone can enjoy it. I don't see how the story line would work though if you didn't realize they were lovers.

I got mine quite a while back, but just recently was able to watch it. I really really like this movie, all of it. I knew what to expect in the first scenes, from others talking about it, but whollly molly, I still fell out of my chair when I saw a side of Adrian I hadnt seen before, so up close and personal. LOL My My. lol

Doh! I guess that's what I get for being a latecomer! I can't find a copy of Tides of War anywhere!:(
I've already watched the "family" version and I think I would end up agreeing with everyone that Tides of War will fill in gaps in the story. It definitely felt like there was something missing.
Amarnagrape try this link and fill out the info for the free dvd :

Who knows...you might get lucky...they might still have some in stock...Of course it took several months to get mine.
It's probably available some where.

This was a bit of an odd movie for me to watch, i admire Adrian Paul as an actor (dudes talented and versatile) and have watched him play his highlander character ever since i was a youngun.
I had the "pg" version but even then i picked up traces and notions that they were gay overtones in the film. Especialy the fight scene between the two oficers by the one making insulting remarks.
Still i only watched this film because of being a fan of Adrian Paul, i had to adjust my notion of Adrian because even the accent and the tonality of his voice was something i was not accustomed to. Looking back i see why so many of the other characters in the offfset 'hated" or "mistrusted" Adrian's charater, especialy the deceased sister, and the guy that manned the 5 million dollar submersible.
Overal it was a good watch and Adrian allong with 3 or 4 other cast members were quite solid and convincing.
With respect RR

Mind you, Adrian plays a gay character (lots of kissing in one scene), so if that makes you uncomfortable, you might want to skip Tides of War in favor of watching the Phantom Below.
