'Iron Man' writers on board for script

Who says there can be only one?

Summit Entertainment is bringing back to the big screen the 1986 sci-fi cult hit "Highlander," with "Iron Man" co-writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway on board to write the script.

The original "Highlander" starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings battling humans, hunting down one another and collecting more power. Lambert played Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, Connery portrayed an Egyptian and Clancy was a barbarian known as the Kurgan. The film -- with its "There can be only one" catch phrase -- spawned four sequels and three television series.

Summit acquired the rights to remake the cult classic from Davis/Panzer Prods. Peter Davis, one of the original producers of the 1986 film, also will produce the new film.

Davis said the new "Highlander" will not just be a remake but will incorporate more backstory elements and prequel aspects that will be fleshed out to expand the story line in a way that is inventive yet faithful to the original story.

He also said romance was key to the series' popularity and would be a central theme in the new film.

"I would hate to think that people viewed 'Highlander' as a sword fighting movie because it's much more than that," he said. "The issues of an immortal falling in love with a woman and knowing she's going to grow old and die in your arms, those are very romantic issues to deal with."

By acquiring the rights to the property, Summit gains a recognizable brand and a franchise with worldwide popularity.

Summit's president of production Erik Feig, along with the company's senior vp production Geoff Shaevitz and creative executive Gillian Bohrer, will oversee the project for the studio.

Marcum and Holloway, repped by ICM, also penned "Convoy," which is set up at Paramount.

Sure thing. If they do a remake a camio or a flashback with Adrian would be nice. They will probably use all new actors which might not be a bad thing. Give it a Fresh look, but there is no alternative to Adrian Paul. Sorry can't help that.

All I hope is that they don't wreck it. Sometimes, I wonder why don't they just leave something that's as good as the original Highlander movie alone?

totally agree. Sometimes things should be left well enough alone. like that saying, "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

I suppose if it's a prequel to the Highlanders we know - it would make sense that Duncan [Adrian] wouldn't be in it.

Slightly off topic: If they needed a younger Duncan, they could use Colin Farrell.
I was watching a DVD last night and there was a preview for this movie - can't remember the name - but it was set in the 1600 or 1700 and these English come in on a ship and there's Indians... It had a really strange feel. I thought maybe it was the Colony movie he's been doing.
I kept arguing with myself as to whether that goodlooking guy with the long dark hair was Adrian or not. It was Colin! I had never noticed a resemblance before - but he had the long hair, a day's worth of scruff... It was totally uncanny.

CONTINUING WITH OFF-TOPIC FOR A MOMENT:

*Smiles* Um, that movie with Colin has been out for a while now. He plays John Smith...Yes, THAT John Smith. Christian Bale is also in it. It's called THE NEW WORLD, a.k.a., yet another Pocahontas story with a bit of a different twist. Sorry, I'll be more PR about it. *Clears throat* It's about the death of a culture so that the birth of a new culture may flourish. It was directed by Terrence Mallick, so that would explain the 'weird vibe' you got off of it. Terrence did THE THIN RED LINE also. He tends to be more 'artistic' in his filming and his scenery tends to get top billing over his cast at times.

That came out right after Colin did ALEXANDER, so it somewhat got buried by the media as anything Colin touched right after that movie got disastrous reviews. That movie, right along with ASK THE DUST with Salma Hayek totally got scrapped in the promotional tours. But, then again, it might have had something to do with the simple fact that those two movies were utterly boring. *Laughs*

*Mumbles* I say this, yet, I own these movies and watch them frequently enough.

I was under the impression this is going to be a remake of the first Highlander
motion picture starring Christopher Lambert as Connor MacCleod.

Yes that's correct. However I don't think Christopher Lambert will be starring in it. They will probably have all new actors in this movie. They mentioned that there will be more back story etc. going into this one. This is all we know currently no more information has been posted yet. At least that I have seen.

There was a big article this weekend in a Scotland newspaper abuot the new Highlander movie.

The budget is set at $50 million budget so big stars are NOT being ruled out.
Mr. Davis is hoping to begin filming in March 2009

Has anybody went over to the hlww group and read the posts? Well I did, and I'm totally disturbed.... a 50 million budget has been given to the remake, and, and the series was referred to as having an obscure cast, and the remake will have big stars.... whatever.... Adrian, and the series is what made HIGHLANDER...I love the story... and all that is Highlander, I even understand the ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR has to be made, and Highlander needs revamped... But I agree with a few that are standing up and saying... give Adrian credit, if not for him, there would be no Highlander, and to refer to the cast as obscure is down right offensive. NOT ONE RED CENT WILL I SPEND ON THE REMAKE, OR ANYTHING HIGHLANDER IF THE NEW PRODUCERS DON'T CHANGE THEIR TUNE.:confused::(

Obscure Cast, my A*ss. I loved Adrian Paul he is what made the series. the spin offs didn't work but his series did. I enjoyed the Highlander movies growing up but they were just another movie until Highlander the Series came out. God I hope they don't pick someone stupid. Ewan Mcgregor would not be able to pull off Highlander. He's too much of a dork! Gerald Butler is a more probable choice.

Obscure Cast:mad:....That makes me so Mad.

Slightly off topic:

It is one of many movies I still want to see. As for Colin as a younger Adrian, I am not to sure about that. (Just my 2 cents.)

It will be interesting to see what they do with the remake. But, the orginial will still be one of my favorite movies.

 OBSCURE?? OK my feathers are officially ruffled on this one. I wouldn't have even watched the first three Highlander movies had I not watched Highlander The Series first. It was the series who gave Highlander it's immortality and Adrian Paul made it that way IMO.
Truthfully I found the original Highlander boring and hard to follow and never liked the concept of the whole outer space thing. Aside from having a couple of great actors for me it was a YAWNNN.
It was my understanding that this was to be a revamping of the original Highlander. Same movie and characters just upgraded with modern technology and added CGI.
IMO if that kind of money had been poured into the Highlander movies in which Adrian was involved in they would have had great results at the box office and for dvd sales.

Lest i speak something blasphemous, i appologize in advance.

I do agree that Adrian Paul had a tremendous role and part to play in the success of "highlander the series". I cannot picture another being on this planet as the highlander, Chrisopher Lambert had his role in the movie and to me just didn't have the capacity to connect and engage the audience.

Granted carrying a series for 8?(not too sure on this ) years is a whole different monster and in it we got to "know" the character duncan mcleod.

My suggestion to this is to have him do a cameo role, or a significant suport role. *covers head* but gets killed off...... (no ban plz) lol.

Many films have had cameo's by previous stars, take the hulk for example, lou ferrigno (the muscled hulk) from the series was put in the new movie as a security guard...

But i would wonder how Adrian would feel about reprising the role or doing a cameo?

 KILL OFF DUNCAN?? BITE YOUR TONGUE ROMEO!!! RFLMBO!!:D
Yeah I do I agree with you on that. I wouldn't want him to get killed off though. But I think if they could find a younger person (possibly a male and female like a brother sister team) to play as Duncan's children and have him do the beginning epis and maybe cameos that it would work. I also think if it was the right hands on then AP might agree to do it.;)

Adrian Paul has such a terrifically deep knowledge of all things Highlander. I love the episodes he directed for the Series. I wonder if he might be asked to direct the remake.

You're right Cocoknight, they do want to remake the original Highlander movie. I think Adrian could direct this project because of his Highlander knowledge and because he did such a great job on the Series. I think he's ready for the challenge.

Don't kill me but I think adrian would play a great Ramírez, him and Sean Connery really do favor alot :) being that Adrian and Sean are my two favorite actors, that would be a dream come true for me

As for the role of Connor Macleod,I have to go with Kevin Mckidd
You might have seen him in trainspotting or rome I know there is some talk about Ewan Mcgregor but I just cant see it..

I agree with Kevin McKidd as Connor. He has the right look for it, and has proven sword skills. Rugged looks as well.
