A little something for those of us who are caring for aging parents...
I look at me and I see you
In the way I look, the things I do
You both gave me the best possible start
I carry you always in my heart.
You gave me your dreams, to help me along
You gave me your strengh, so I could be more strong.
You gave me your grace, compassion and love
You gave me your faith in the One above
When I thank you for giving me all that you could
You say you've done only what parents should
You prepared me so that I could go along my way
You knew I would travel without you one day
Though I care for you now, you must feel no shame
My love and respect will always be the same
Our road grows short, the fork's up ahead
I can see it quite cleary through the tears I shed
Let's look back on our journey, the joys, the smiles
Slow down just a little and enjoy these last miles.
well now that I'm crying my eyes out:o:(...what a BEAUTIFUL poem...THANKYOU...it's so fitting.....for so many...including me. I' ve observed the hurt in my father's eyes....I feel like I can't reassure him enough. I wish he would understand...thanks not needed...it is a privilage to be there for him and my mother...though he feels the strain more then she does...he acts like I've done some kind of great service...applogizing over and over....I love them both.....even if I did'nt....I would never see them go without.
OK THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL!! And now I'm crying too. But it's a good kind of cry.
Anyone who can write something so true and so beautiful REALLY does get what life's all about!! And that poem can help a soul restore it's belief in humanity. THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT!!;)

Thank you both so much. :)
hcla, I saw your post and I have a similar situation with my parents. So this was my attempt to put it in perspective for us.
cocoknight, I really appreciate your kind words.
I guess I'm in a taking stock, bluesy kind of a mood right now. Things want to come out that I'm really not trying to write. So I've finally had to give in and just let it flow. This one I think has been gnawing at me for over half my life. :o
To a Friend Lost
We found each other in a remarkable way,
Children, playing in the heat of the day,
Finding lost treasures in the sand,
Exploring, loud laughter, hand in hand.
Eye to eye and heart to heart,
Sharing our secrets, vowing never to part.
How came I to be here? What about you?
By chance, by destiny, a stroke of luck or two?
Summer must last forever, it cannot end,
If it does, we must go - and I'll lose my friend.
We'll go back to our different worlds, we knew
Will we write, will we call - what will we do?
Best end it cleanly - sever all ties,
I'll not smile and wave with face saving lies.
Angry words, lost tempers marred our goodbyes,
Abrupt parting - it's over! No time to apologize.
Many years have passed, we've both gone our own way
I still think of my friend, day after day.
These many years later I still feel the loss
Would I have done the same thing had I realized the cost?

very nicely put :)
Renate
:) I really like it. I think the thing I like most about your poetry is that it is so easy to relate to and it tugs the heartstrings.

My father and I have come to our journey's end. Though I am happy that he is now free of the disease and infirmities that plagued him for the last years of his life, I will miss him terribly.

You are very welcome!
Today we returned from England and I must say I had my Dad with me all the time, sometimes I had the impression he was just behind me and I would see him if I turned around fast enough. Does this sound weird? I could even hear him comment on some things I saw!

Doesn't sound weird to me. I believe they are still with us and watching out for us just as they always have. :)
