This thread is for all those lucky people that have been able to view the movie and talk about it freely here with out spoiling it for those still waiting to view it.

So lets keep all chat about what you thought about Captain Drake here and allow others to view it without anything spoiling it for them :)

I would also appreciate it as l am one of the unlucky ones still to have not viewed it :( I just need to be a little more patient and l am sure l will see it soon.

From what l have heard so far it has been received very well with people enjoying it and loving the comedy within it.

ahhh...very cute indeed...I feel like I'm 5 years old.....go ahead kick me off the forum....Adrian did a wonderful job...but He is above this type of work...and it is a ridculous movie....but I guess in these economic times...we all have to pay the bills. The Source was better, and Lost Colony kicked butt.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was light hearted and fun!:p I hope it comes out on dvd because I thought it was one of Sci-fi's better movies. The rest of the cast was great, especially the 2 drunk crewmen. They made me smile and that is always a plus in my book! Plus the connection to mythology from all over the world and not just Greek or Roman was fun. I am a huge mythology nut!!

Just because it was a TV movie doesn't mean it is dumb or beneath anyone! This is where you reach new audiences and fans. And if Adrian was above this type of movie (which I seriously doubt and happens to be a genre and style I love), does that mean people like me who love to watch them are beneath him?!?! I don't think so!

Can't remember when I put this up, sometime back in 2008. I'm awaiting Mr Mountebank's article on the subject later today. He flew to the US just to see this you know. I hope he wasn't disappointed!

I enjoyed it. I thought it was a good SciFi Flick. It isn't a Hollywood Multi Million dollar cinema movie, but I liked it. Adrian always looks good with a sword too. :)

I haven't seen it yet either, as I'm in Canada. The review I read was very positive and especially so toward Adrian! This is just one person's opinion, but a B+ is a pretty fair rating! I'm looking forward to it. Here is the link to the review, which Stephy so kindly posted on APUK and I repost here if that's OK.

Will it win an emmy? No but it was fun to watch. Adrian put just the right amount of humor to his Drake without putting him over the top. I enjoyed it, it made me smile. And of course, Adrian is great looking in period dress. I didn't agree with everything the reviewer had to say but you're right Tessa, he was very complimentary toward Adrian and a B+ is great. I didn't quite get what he meant when he said that Adrian "put too much effort into his accent". Doesn't he realize that Adrian is English with an English accent?

Thanks to a very kind friend I got to see Drake this afternoon here in the UK.
Not much wrong with the actors performances, a little over the top perhaps but that suited the rather tongue in cheek feel of the whole thing. I even began to like Drake's weird Dorset twang and at least Adrian kept it consistent, most of the time. And yes he did look great in those costumes.
But........ and its a big BUT those have to be the worst special effects I have ever seen anywhere in recent years, no matter how small the budget of the movie. Computer games that came out 15 years ago had better CGI than that.
I'm sure they must have had great fun making the film and I would love to see the out-takes, I bet there were some giggles there.
Did it entertain and amuse me? It certainly did, I laughed like crazy, I'm just not sure if it was for the reasons the producers intended, or in the right places.

I liked the movie. Granted the story line at times was hard to get into but the comical antics of Adrian made it worth while watching. I got half way through the movie and started thinking, what would a remake of Monty Python and The Holy Grail be like if Adrian starred in it?:D

I thought the movie was a riot! It was like a cross between Monty Python and something Andrew Lee Potts might have written and directed. I loved it!

The CGI style was perfect! I know, some of you just fainted. But when you think of the humour and style of the movie (Monty Python-ish), anything better would have ruined it. :D

The cool part too was SciFi Channel ran Lost Colony the next day. Talk about contrasting characters! In less than 24 hours Adrian went from a nutter to normal. :D

I laughed till my sides hurt!:D I believe I remember Adrian saying that they were having alot of fun making this and it showed. Adrian has perfect timing for comedy and played his character just abit "over the top" which added greatly to the comedic tone of the movie. The effects were primitive but fit right in to the hilariousness of the whole piece. I thoroughly enjoyed the lightness and Adrian having lots of fun!

To Jessika...I never meant to imply that the movie and anyone watching it is beneath or low...forgive me...rather I meant to say that Adrian is such agood actor... and I believe that the movie does not suit his skills...keep in mind for what ever reason...I was expecting a Historical type movie...not a spoof....I love mythology/fantasy/sci-fi...but really folks this was funny because it was soooo....ridculous, with that said...I'am truly sorry if I offended anyone, in the sense that if one watches...you are low, or non-intelligent...that I NEVER Intended....I expect that the people that approach Adrian for movies...give the roles he deserves....he is skilled...and the Sci-fi movie of the week is not my idea of the "BEST ROLES". A buisness person thinks that...1. Do it for money, 2. Do it cause you love it, 3.Do it if you have to , because, theres 'nothing else to do.....BOREDOM does'nt make money...nor does it help a persons PR. Thats the end of my babble.....just remember...I watched because of Adrian....not because I'm fond of the Sci-fi Channel.

I JUST HAVE TO ADD HERE....mabe they paid him better, and took it from the special effects budget...that would be cool...those CGI'S were AWFUL.:p:):(

As found reported in Hokum Magazine.

The Immortal voyage of Captain Drake.

Well I just got back from beautiful down town Burbank, the scene of a frenzied crowd of Captain Drake fans who probably like me wondered what the fuss was about. It seems like only yesterday that I predicted this was going to be a bit of a “Carry On!” and it was.

Captain Drake chose to sail all over the place with a crew of around 12 including a couple of officers where in effect to sail the Golden Hind required around 80, and not a powder monkey in sight. Sound stuff from the photographers as the deck would have appeared a little crowded. I loved Cadiz, and I’m sure the Spanish do to. Mind seeing the Golden Hind with 3 gun ports to start with, then 6 and finally 8 must have sent shivers down their spines. “How do dees Britishers do dis trick?” Good question, and one I can’t answer. And what speed that ship could produce with no wind and sails at half mast. Top speed of the Hind was around 8 knots but with the Acme special effects department and a couple of Evinrude outboard motors I expected outriggers at any time.

Do you like French golden delicious? Captain drake does.

Don’t you just love the spoken English word? Or was it Irish and Gaelic with a little Dorset-cockney added for good humour, I couldn’t tell, it changed so often. And whilst buckets of water and a wind machine blew really hard the line “There’s a storm brewing sir,” were uttered. Drake could have checked his antique banjo barometer, invented in around 1750, so modern was the Golden Hind, almost 100 years ahead of its time!

The wheel was a work of wonder and spun and spun as if direction wasn’t a problem. Once again the history books tell us that Drake’s steering mechanism was far simpler. He used a very long spar attached to his rudder. Only replicas had a wheel for safety reasons. Oh and for lashing people too. Shame, the only thing lashed here was the spoken word.

Some memorable lines, taking accents into account.

“No barter with Santo Varter!” rolls of the tongue, doesn’t it?

“You fart for Spain I fart for England!” I hate long-winded speeches at the best of times but this took the ships biscuit.

“How do you kill a Basilisk?”
“With the blood of a weasel, the crow of a chicken or an image of itself.” I half expected Harry Potter to turn up at any moment. And no one told the horses not to look at the thing. They did the sensible thing! They ran away!

“Here be monsters!” OK amongst the great white polystyrene icebergs there’s sure to be a couple lurking. I thought everyone knew that!

But all in all they didn’t do the favourite on board ship joke:-

“Captain Sire where be the head?”
“Port side!”
“Gawd I can’t wait that long!”
A simple omission but it would have added somewhat to the humour.

I did love the oracle. The one that raised a storm, the one that served her king, what she could do with a mirror was nobodies business. But to wear a thong under her harem pants! Unforgivable, and yes her bum did look big in them!

I also loved Drakes daughter who just went to prove that rowing a boat is mans work after all. As for her off the shoulder number whilst at the North Pole, someone pass her a fur coat please. The poor girl had already lost her underwear earlier. Fact! Never use a bra as a means of escape. Just flash the double D’s. It sort of -------- well enough of that!

The ocean going cicadas’ were fun!.

And then to find the Tree of Knowledge and not the Tree of Life and allowing the fruit to slowly disappear into the sand. Some people never learn!

Finally to find The Son of Jor-EL’s icy castle amongst the icebergs and the Tree of Life, frozen in time and guarded by something called a Yeoman Gander! Well that’s what it sounded like to me. Or were they pulling Drakes drumstick? I’m sure it was meant to be amusing. I didn’t get it! Or did I? Still the juice flowed from the fruit! Even at minus 45 degrees!

Ok I suppose you’ve come to the conclusion that I hated it. Certainly not! I loved it for what it was and thank god for films like this.

For those who love historical accuracy this film is not for you. For those who love the beautiful Dorset accent, forget it. For those who love to watch daft “B” class movies on a rainy Sunday afternoons and drink them self silly on grog, yes this is right up your street.

Ed Wood’s film Plan 9 from Outer Space won “The Golden Turkey” award. This one should take the “Golden Duck” or should that be Drake!

I don't think he realized that Adrian is English. Just shows, he doesn't do much research. But hey his opinion. As I said, I liked the movie. It did remind me of monte pyhon too. These are the type of movies that the SciFi Channel puts out. Most of them have this feel. Personally I would love to see Adrian is more Romantic Movies with lots of love scenes. Just me I guess, more naked Adrian the better. :p:o

I'd love to say--"You Brits sound all the same", but you don't. Problem I have is I might know you are Brit-- but I am totally lost on which accent places you where in England........Mr. Mountebank might find himself in my place if faced with the accents in America-- Ethnically as well a demographic.

And so, the Dorset is it??? The Dorset accent Adrian used in the role was completely lost on me. I just knew it wasn't his normal sound....

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't he use his normal Brit twang in Wraiths of the Roanoke???

Vernon Gaunt

Seriously Erom that is actual Devonshire speak. Us Brits don't all live in half timbered thatched cottages with reeking lumbs (Scottish).
Maybe your not convinced. Ok let's say Shakespeare wasn't born in Stratford Upon Avon but in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His Richard (The Third ) wouldn't have said, "my horse my horse my kingdom for a horse." It'd gone something like this; "me cuddy me cuddy me kindom fre a cuddy". So now it's as important to be born in the right place and to have a local dialect.

Ann Sinclair Gillies (from Newcaste) had a famous son, Butch Cassidy. Sorry but this one is really funny. I'm thinking of the famous scene when they're both standing on the edge of the cliff about to jump.

"Yee canna swim! Divvent be daft the fall will kill weh."

Unfortunately there isn't a direct Devon accent translator. But if you have some favourite lines from favourite films let me know and I'll put them into the proper prospective. Geordie wise!

Another message from Mr Mountebank

Vernon! Can't you get them to understand I actually liked the film for what it was. Funny! I'm sure that if I'd have been around when the original Highlander film was made I'd have had something to say about Mr Lambert's portrayal of a Scottish Highlander's accent. But it all adds charm! Unless you are Kevin Cosner playing Robin Hood. Now that was beyond the pale. (meaning in English: Unacceptable; outside agreed standards of decency).

Shakes head. Everyone wants to be a critic!

Actually, Adrian's accent was like the guy said. It fluctuated quite a bit and there were a few moments it sounded like he was trying to force a British accent, which made it even funnier.

Anyway, the accent changes made the movie even more fun. I couldn't wait to see which accent was coming next. I loved it! :D

And thanks ever so much for that Captain Drake musical vid you did on your webpage...since I truly did think Adrian would burst into song when recruiting his crew to find the Tree of Life--hearing the song you chose along with seeing the clip you selected from the movie made it all great fun!

I will have to cock an ear the next time I watch the DVD I made of The Immortal Voyages of Captain Drake--just to see if I discern anything but a British accent coming from his character...the biggest problem for me while watching the movie is that it made me laugh and giggle--and well, I never do those things quietly--so who knows....

I agree with you, Sam, about the accents. I wouldn't know one English accent from another, but with me being from Western Pennsylvania, you and I would certainly sound quite different. Especially with the "Pittsburghese" we are noted for. "Y'all vs Yunz".
I did notice Adrian's accent - it was impossible not to - but what got my attention was his voice. He seemed to be using a different voice - rougher, more gravelly. I eventually got used to it, but at first, found it irritating and hard to listen to. But he was obviously having fun, and it showed. With his comedic streak, he really made Capt. Drake his own.
I admit, though, that I would love to see him in something more serious, without a gazillion special effects. I could do without giant snakes and lizards! Although I'm looking forward to Eyeborgs and Nine Miles Down, I'd still like to see something more romantic. Did anyone ever read the "Outlander" series? I so wish Adrian could have done that.

Oh Sam those nasty little bugs do tend to find a way in don't they. Still hopefully our pc will return all better and cleaned up.

As for regional British accents they are many varied for such a small country. Almost every English county has its own accent and then there are the various regions of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland that have their own accents too. A person from North Wales sounds very different to a person from South Wales and so on.
Education plays a part as well. VG and I grew up only 3 miles apart yet have very different accents. The reason is that I went to a school where regional accents were a big No No and we had them drummed out of us by hours and hours of elocution lessons. I actually like regional accents, its bad grammar I don't like. You can have a regional accent and still use good grammar though.:)

Why has no one complained that the daughter had a mild English accent of some sort, rather than a Spanish one? So, the accent was right for the historical Drake? That's nice to know; it would have been awful had he spoken in Devonish. Only the Poser would have understood him. In any case, the "hard ar" was very piratey. Arrrrr!

I watched Drake with a nonHL friend and I commented that if that was based on a true story, or even on Drake's logs, then Drake was an awful liar. My friend replied that really the most fantastical thing about the film was that AP was much too young to have a daughter in her twenties! :D

I certainly think it was the right accent to use Cool. It instantly made me think of the area the real Drake came from. The "hard ar" and the lost H's were perfect and very piratey. If you think of the classic piratey "Arrr Jim lad" or "Shiverrr me timbrrrs" all pirates seem to speak in a "West Country" accent. If our mythology is correct its the area most British pirates came from. Dorset, Devon and Cornwall are always associated with pirates and wreckers.
As for why Drake's "Spanish" daughter sounded so English I haven't a clue.

Coolwater
01-29-2009, 02:17 PM
I read about the wreckers. American myth has the pirates as Scots and Irish (who have very hard arrrrs) who rebelled from the British navy and then preyed largely on British merchants. Naturally we can have a sneaking sympathy toward them. Anyone who pays taxes can sympathize with smugglers, too, but it's hard to sympathize with wreckers. It seems so cold hearted to wreck a ship full of men and let them drown.

EROM
01-29-2009, 05:59 PM
I must have missed something. Why do you say that Drake's daughter was Spanish? I just assumed that she was English as was he.

I am looking forward to watching this again when it airs again. There are so many things to watch and listen for next: number of accents, number and types of myth references, different CGI's, poses affected by Drake, ways to kill a monster, references to other movies.... We need to develop a score card and see who finds the most!

Vernon Gaunt
01-29-2009, 06:12 PM
Francis Drake never had kids. But that's not to say he didn't put it about a bit.

There may well have been Irish and Scottish Wreckers but the guilty parties as far wreckers are concerned are the Cornish. No doubt about it. If it's a race of dirty deeders by Tre Pol and Pen tell all Cornish men.

The Smugglers' Song

If you wake at midnight, and hear a horse’s feet,
Don’t go drawing back the blind, or looking in the street,
Them that asks no questions isn’t told a lies.
Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!
Five and twenty ponies
Trotting through the dark –
Brandy for the parson,
‘Baccy for the Clerk;
Laces for a lady, letters for a spy,
And watch the wall my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!

Running round the woodlump if you chance to find
Little barrels, roped and tarred, all full of brandy-wine,
Don’t you shout to come and look, nor use ‘em for your play.
Put the brushwood back again – and they’ll be gone next day!

If you see the stable-door setting open wide;
If you see a tired horse lying down inside;
If your mother mends a coat cut about and tore;
If the lining’s wet and warm – don’t you ask no more!

If you meet King George’s men, dressed in blue and red,
You be careful what you say, and mindful what is said.
If they call you “pretty maid” and chuck you ‘neath the chin,
Don’t you tell where no one is, nor yet where no one’s bin!

Knocks and footsteps round the house – whistles after dark –
You’ve no call for running out till the house-dogs bark.
Trusty’s here, and Pincher’s here, and see how dumb they lie –
They don’t fret to follow when the gentlemen go by!

If you do as you’ve been told, ‘likely there’s a chance,
You’ll be give a dainty doll, all the way from France,
With a cap of Valenciennes, and a velvet hood –
A present from the Gentlemen, along o’ being good!
Five and twenty ponies
Trotting through the dark –
Brandy for the parson,
‘Baccy for the Clerk;
Them that asks no questions isn’t told a lie –
Watch the wall my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!

I finally got to see the movie, (Thanks to Tovie) and enjoyed it very much!
The story and special effects were better than I thought it might be. I don't know what all the fuss was about.

Some of my favorite lines were:

"When a man wants you dead, there's little harm in angering him further."

The scene is snowing quite a bit and he says, "It's a lovely day for a fight."

I would have to agree, those lines were funny. Although I love seeing Adrian in Love interest roles; Adrian playing Daddy roles is refreshing.

I totally agree. This movie was a breath of fresh air. As much as I love seeing AP in the dramatic roles....I rather enjoy seeing him in something light-hearted for a change. I DID!!:p
I just assumed that having what was apparently a Spanish mother and a British father that the girl grew up bilingual.
;)Sailors are nortorious for having a lady waiting in every port and their mistress is the sea.
Of course AP doesn't LOOK old enough to have an adult daughter. But then neither do I. (ROFLMAO!!) *Sam making note to self....don't forget to buy the hair coloring that works on grey hair.....:p hubby needs some..*

Well Technically Sam by Adrian's age he could have a 20 year old daughter, but your right he doesn't look it. I wonder if he does anything to keep himself looking young. Working out is the obvious, but I mean getting rid of grey and such.

I like the mystique of not knowing for sure. But given his current age and fitness level he probably hasn't needed anything yet.
It saddens me though when I see people in the acting profession who take that sort of stuff too far and end up looking like something from a wax museum.
I won't deny for a second that I find him VERY easy on the eyes but I like what I see on the inside too.

I enjoyed the discussion in the cabin when they were trying to figure out the map and especially the references to Icarus. It was always one of my favorites when it came to Greek Mythology.

I forgot to mention, the captain Drake character reminded me of Duncan MacLeod in the past without the angst. He seemed more carefree. I liked that.

It was nice to see AP play an angst-free character, wasn't it? I hadn't thought about it. And VG, things haven't changed much: I grew up in a town with low level mafiosi running numbers (illegal lottery), and selling other vices. There was a restaurant called Tony's with the best cheese steaks EVER (Those folks in Philly have never even had a real cheese steak!), and the thugs ate there, and so did we. We kids were careful not to look at them, and pretended not to see the cash and papers traded back and forth. The local cops were in on it, of course.

As for my friend's comment about Drake's daughter, she was referring to AP's apparent age (or lack of it), and was impressed when I told her that he's pushing 50. It's a nice compliment! Still, historically, I think she was wrong. The real Drake probably apprenticed to go to sea when he was no less than 12, but wouldn't have hit puberty until he was around 15. So, if he fathered a child at 15, he could have a 20-some-year-old daughter if he were at least 35, right?

I was assuming that the daughter's mother was not Drake's wife, unless he married her in Spain and didn't think it counted outside of Spain. If he came into port every few years, wouldn't the daughter's accent be far more Spanish than English?

I would think so too Coolwater. She probably should have had much more of a spanish accent. But maybe we are to believe she was educated in England......But I'm just guessing on that....
Now...I had a child at seventeen who is 33 years old...and I'm 50....
How old was Drake supposed to be in the movie?? They never said...or did they?? Maybe I need to watch it again to get a better feel for the timeline...:p

I assumed from the movie that the daughter had a Spanish mother so she really should have had a Spanish accent. I doubt she would have had any kind of formal education too. But then this was a fantasy story not real history.:)
The real Sir Francis Drake was born in 1540 so would have been 52 as the movie began in 1592. That was quite old for Tudor times and if they are going to make a sequel they better get a move on because Drake died in 1596.:D

:D Thanks for helping with the timeline Stephy.
And since it is Fantasy ....those last four years could at least pop out at least one or two good sequels.:p

Yes they would have to get a move on a sequel to Capt. Drake, though I don't think they will. Didn't the real Capt. Drake die of Dissentry. Don't think I spelled that right, but it's not a fun way to go. So if they did do a sequel they should change that part.

It sure sounded to me like they were thinking about a sequel. It the scene where they found Plato's map, Drake pointed out the spot where they believed Atlantis was but said they would have to leave that for another time. That could be their next movie, Drake and the Lost City of Atlantis. Did anyone else catch that?

Yup----I was wondering if they were leaving the door open for a next movie when I heard that line;)

Yeah, I noticed it, too. So, Drake has to get to Atlantis within two years, and die of something quicker and less disgusting than "the squitters."

The movie was not great but it was a spoof and Adrian played it that way and did a good job of it. The effects were very low budget but it was lighthearted and amusing and of course we never mind spending time looking at Adrian in period dress!! :D ;)

I wouldn't mind watching Adrian in a sequel to Drake. Maybe this time he could have a love interest with a women from Atlantis.
