I'm sharing my favourite chocolate cake recipe. Hope anyone who makes it, enjoys it as much as we do. Sorry, but I do not have the metric equivenants.

Chocolate Cake

3 cups flour

2 cups sugar

2 tsp baking soda

1/2 cup cocoa

2 tsp vinegar

1 cup salad oil

1 tsp salt

2 tsp vanilla

2 cups cold water

Put all ingredients in one bowl. Mix well. Put in a greased & floured 9"x13" pan. Bake at 350 F for 25-40 min. Check with a toothpick at 25 or 30 min.

If you want to make cupcakes, bake for 15 min.

The times are approximate. Adjust for your oven, if it's hotter or cooler. Enjoy the cake. :)

do you or anybody out there know how to make chocolate frosting from scratch? All I know is My grandma use to cook it in a cast iron skillet, using Hersheys coco powder. It was the best eatin' ever!:D

Okay, I have a question. I'm sorry if this is a stupid one. This is just me showing my air head tendencies. Salad oil? I know you can make salad dressing with any oils and I know that some people just prefer oil on their salads instead of dressing, but, I thought that was Olive Oil. I'm an Olive Oil fanatic, but, I use Vegetable at times if I don't think my meal should have that olive oil taste (This is rare as I think nearly all meals should have that olive oil taste :D ). I do tend to use Vegetable oil where deserts are concerned though. I don't really look at other oils, though I know they're out there. Is there one that actually says "Salad Oil" on it? If so, how does it taste?

salad oil: cooking oil like vegetable oil, sunflower oil, canola oil. Does that help?

The only way that I know how to make icing from scratch is like a butter icing. There's no cooking involved with that. I'll look for the recipe & post in this thread.

I use olive oil in baking too - there is really no taste issue- I only use vegetable oil for deep frying which is not often and shortening for biscuts-
need good recipes for frosting or anything try the FoodNetwork.com

:o HCLA I know the frosting you are talking about. My mom and I both used to make it all the time. Unfortunately Mom died and my memory got shot out when I had a series of mild strokes in 2005. I'll try to contact my sisters and see if any of them remember how to make it.:)

This is my recipe for chocolate frosting. Don't know if its like the one you want but its pretty good::)
1oz cocoa sifted powder
1 1/2 oz soft butter
2 tablespoons whole milk
4 to 6 oz sifted icing sugar

Melt butter and stir in cocoa, add milk and mix well until warm (do not allow to boil) Stir in icing sugar adding extra if mixture seems to runny. Allow to cool completely before spreading on cake.

This is also a good chocolate icing recipe:

1 stick butter or margarine
2/3 cup unsweetened Cocoa (the darker the cocoa, the better)
3 cups powdered sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
