View Full Version : Hung Gar Kung Fu in Booklet?

Greetings to all. I'm new so my respect to the leaders of this forum and its members. I have always admired Adrian's passion for the martial arts and deep inside me, I have always wanted to learn for self defense. My question is, has he ever mentioned to make his own version of what he has learned over time, put them in a book, booklet or even in binder with drawings and instructions, for the beginner like me. Because honestly, I would buy pages of the first chapter and learn from that. It would be like a step by step course. So, after mastering the basic moves, I will then subscribe to the next level. I think I would be so inspired to learn if he was my teacher even if he is not teaching me personally. Would anyone be interested if he ever make one other than me? :) I will even volunteer to help him make this happen if I have to. <wink>

Sorry wisdom, but you can't learn Martial Arts from a book by anyone. I have Bruce Lee's book Tao of Jeet Kune Do. It's nice to read but what I learned of Kung Fu San Soo was through long hours and commitment at a studio with an instructor or Sifu that was also committed to Martial Arts.
"Thos who know, don't talk about it. Those who talk about it, don't know."
:D Hi Wisdom. WELCOME to the board.
A book.....probably not...BUT...a video?? DEFINITELY!!
Maybe one that is a mixture of basics and showing his skills with him discussing it. I think that would be a very nice item to add to ones collection.;)

Hi EvanStar, if I were to forward your message to all the people who have bought books and who have written them, I can only wish they will agree with you. Unfortunately, each individual is different... I have learn so many things from only reading, from languages, dancing, cooking to how to behead a chicken and kill a pig for a luau. :) If one is committed, one will succeed.
Thanks for the welcome Sam, :) a video is definitely GREAT, but I was considering the factor that Mr. Paul may not have time, let alone hire someone to video him doing the arts step by step and explain the moves at the same time. But on his spare time, he can write the instructions and moves, then hire a illustrator/cartoonist to closely match his instructions. Add some real pics of him and voila.. but most of all, he can control the phase of his project. Chapter one - his message to those who wants to learn, the martial artist way of life, the difficulties one will endure and his, and basic moves. Chapter two - will come later... I for one would just love to read about anything he writes about martial arts, so if he can teach in this form, why not?

Hello Wisdom,
welcome !!!!
Sam, I would buy that video- although I might probably end up sitting on the floor with my legs twisted when I tried to make the requested moves:D
But it would still be fun !!!!

Hi brilliant, thanks for the welcome. Well maybe at this time, Adrian's plate is full to think about this type of project. Although I did recall he was going to put a martial arts page somewhere in the site, I read it somewhere. Did that happen at all?

It's better to have a teacher. You can't know whether you're doing the moves correctly unless you have a sifu to give you feedback, and with moves like those, you could get hurt if you do them wrong.
AP had an essay about martial arts on the old site, didn't he? Perhaps you could "Ask Adrian" for a new one?

I see now the importance of having a teacher, just like having a trainer at the gym, a wrong twist is definitely deadly. I guess what I truly desire was Adrian's essay about martial arts, he did have one last time but I haven't seen it posted anywhere. I wish there was more essay though.
Speaking of "Ask Adrian", he must be so busy lately because I am still seeing old articles since Oct. of 2008. If he is short staff, I would volunteer to assist if this was the issue.

I got home after 14 hours at work ( I was there on Sunday, too - what a dra-a-aa-a-g) too wired after the 2 three-shot lattes that kept me going all day; hubby and daughter are sleeping. One is snoring - guess who?
Already tried to calm down with a snifter of cognac, a box of chocolates (just because... ;) ), a hot bubble bath - still wired.
So I'm surfing the forum and...how did I miss this thread? It's hilarious! Of course, I would never make sex jokes, being such a proper Lousiana lady and all. :D Happy Fat Tuesday, everybody - uh-oh, gotta go! ...something big just came up...

Oh gosh I don't even care to compare, Adrian and Fabio, not on the same level. But speaking of which, this reminded me of something. I was in Alberstons one fine day and they had display of books, novels and etc. on the way out and I saw on the cover of what resembles like Adrian, I don't know if it the title cover said "Highlander" on it, but my question would be, Is there a sexy novels out there where Adrian is on? If there is, I have been missing out and who is the author of such novels? :D

AP has classic tall, dark and handsome good looks...Fabio, well, is Fabio. Not even close to being in the same class. I would love to know as well, if there are any novels out there with him on the cover...I know that he went to some sort of party for awhile back (Fabio was there), but I don't remember reading if he was ever on a cover...Great question Wisdom!

As far as I know Adrian was never a Cover Model in person even though quite a few authors used Duncan MacLeod (and so Adrian ;) as the model for their hero and so on the cover.
There are many romance (and other) novels mentioning Adrian and even dedicated to him :)
I am not a reader of romance novels hoverer I do know that Karen Marie Moning is a great fan of Adrian's (she used to have it stated on her web site) and I heard that she does mention him in her Highlander series of books
http://www.karenmoning.com/novels/index_highlander.html
Iris Johansen said this in her book Countdown
"Did you ever see the TV program Highlander? - You look like the actor who plays the lead.
He was very good and pretty, very pretty."
So if you are a reader you can be on a constant quest for the mention of Adrian in books :D

I love romance novels. I have three I need to read but need to finish Andels and Demons before the movie comes out with Tom Hanks. Here are two other Romance authors that I like and enjoy reading their books. Eloisa James and Monica Mccarty. One of Monica's books is titles Highlander Untamed. Really liked that one.
Something I have noticed is there are many romance novels on the Scottish Highlander. Many I am sure are based on the mistique of Scotland's highland men. And definitely some on our wonderful AP.
I love Scottish men...a few years ago I almost moved there. Always thought I would marry one too. Instead I married a Russian/ Lithowanian/ German. Talk about a combination there. Good Looking and stubborn as all get out.

Love your comment Little, I haven't been here for awhile, so I didn't see this comment. If I get the chance to stand in the middle of a room full of men from all countries, I wouldn't know how to pick and tell the difference between the a Scottish man from a Lithowanian man. Now, if one of them is wearing that skirt and that musical instrument, I would pick him. Which reminds me, what episode was that in Highlander that AP was wearing the scottish skirt?? (what do you call that skirt LOL) Forgive me for my ignorance... Anyway, AP was so adorable with his long barbaric hair. LOL

Its called A "kilt". Usually made from wool woven with the colors and pattern called "tartan" representing the wearers "clan" or family!
The musical instrument is called "bagpipes" and were originally used to call the clans or clan members to meeting.
Just abit of Scot info. You can google any Scot family name or simply Scottish tartans and find a pic of their tartan, as well as, the family history, from which area of Scotland they lived, ect. I found mine which is Robertson and Graham--neat stuff!:D

Hehehe--yeah--I can understand that. However, they are the music which stirs my soul, and that was even before I discovered my Scot heritage.
It sounds weird, but I believe, your heritage influences your life even if you are unaware of that heritage. For example, I was born and raised in Waco, Texas, not knowing about my Scot heritage until my mid-thirties.
Yet, I have always loved the pipes, attended a Jr College whose mascot is The Highlanders, whose school colors is the Black Watch tartan (Clan Graham)! My dad was attending nite classes there while I was still in high school. The college, in the spring, hosted the "Highland Games" for one week. My dad took my siblings and I and I was HOOKED! I was so fascinated with the piping contest, the games and the drum and pipe band.
On the last day of the games we arrived at the usual 6:00am for warmups.
Now mind you, this campus is very hilly, and lots of shade trees. I was sitting on the library steps looking thru a fairly heavy fog when I heard a lone piper playing Amazing Grace while warming up for the competition!
I could barely make out his form, but the sound and the fog and the landscape---it wasnt very hard for me to imagine the Highlands!
Dad bought me a book of tartans, which I read cover to cover never realizing my family on both his and mum's side were Scots!
Some years later, dad's mother gave me a beautiful, heavy silver worked bracelet with a huge oval agate center stone. When I asked where it came from, she told me from her dad's aunt who lived in Scotland!
I was hooked! Turns out my dad's side are Robertson and my mothers side is Graham who came from Scotland in the early 1800's via Ireland!
No wonder my heart skips several beats everytime I hear the pipes!
I have two heart felt requests each nite in prayer. One is to meet Adrian one day and second to be able to go to Scotland before I am too old. I just know my heart will feel as if I am home there.:)

appeace, I know you will get your wishes one day. :) Maybe Adrian will come to a con in Texas soon. Wouldn't that be wonderful? If he could join Peter Wingfield at his con in San Antonio next year that would be excellent. I've been to a PWFC con, and absolutely enjoyed myself, even though Peter wasn't there except by webcam from England. We did have Valentine Pelka, Jim Byrnes and David Abramowitz, though. Hi Wisdom, you are not ignorant!
Adrian is wearing a kilt in "Family tree,Homeland,Dramatic Licence,Through a glass darkly,Forgive us our trespasses..." and many more. And he DOES look awesome in it!:D Not many men can wear it with so much grace or "have" the legs to wear it,but he...:D
Appeace, this is a great story.I´m sure one day your dreams will come true.
If our roots really influence us then I have to have scottish roots as well:I was always fascinated by this country and hearing the bagpipes is making me dream! I once was in Scottland and it was one of the best experiences in my life!!!
So there is only one great wish left....( a con in Paris would be nice,I love this city )

I agree Adrian does have the legs for them kilt LOL.
Ok this is just my curiousity and for fun...I once saw an episode on the Simpsons where the character Willy wore a kilt and the wind blew, making his skirt go up and his behind was quickly shown for a sec. Clarify this with me, real Scottish men, they do wear underpants under them kilts right? LOL If they didn't there is nothing wrong with it if I might add <grin>.

Wisdom, my first con was the walkabout in L.A. in 2004. I had never been to a con before, never flown, much less visited L.A., but I bit the bullet and went anyway. My family and friends thought I was crazy going out there alone, but I did what I wanted to do. And, I'm so glad I did. I had an excellent time. I made new friends, and had roomies that I got along well with. This past April, I went to HLWW9, which was in L.A., and had an even better time. Adrian's Tai Chi class, the showing of 'Eyeborgs', the saturday night concert, lounging in the bar area with everyone, listening to a private, late night performance by Freya, Richard Ridings' daughter, who has such a beautiful voice..all these are memories I will cherish forever. So, what I'm trying to say is, if you do go to a con alone, you're not really alone. It's such a feeling of comraderie, you wouldn't believe. :)

Wisdom, I took several photos of Adrian while he was on stage from my seat, which was a pretty decent one on about the fifth row, left of center. During the Tai Chi class, where no photos were allowed, I was very close to him. He even came over and adjusted my stance..my feet were crooked..lol. He was so close I can tell you that his eyes aren't dark brown as they seem, but a hazely greenish color. Yep, I was that close, and, I thought I truly am dreaming..this just isn't happening. :)
We all had so much fun in Adrian's class. He was in such a happy, easygoing mood, he made it fun for everyone. Like I said before..an experience I'll cherish forever.;)
