The Breed starring Adrian Paul

An MPCA, Starz! and Sony Screen Classics joint venture, The Breed is a Michael Oblowitz film and was shot in just 24 days on a budget of only USD$4M.

It is a modern-day story of a world in which over four thousand vampires, genetic offshoots of humanity, whose life span is measured in hundreds of years, are secretly co-existing with humans. Dr. Cross (Peter Halasz) is a rogue vampire, who tries to secretly destabilize the fragile peace by committing a series of grisly murders.

A human government agent, Steven Grant (Bokeem Woodbine), is forced to team up with a vampire cop, Aaron Gray (Adrian Paul), to find the killer. Together, they must overcome their prejudices as they struggle against supernatural and political powers.

Adrian describes A Breed Apart as "a mixture of Brazil, Blade Runner and Dark City, with a little 48 Hours thrown in." He also calls it a "thriller comedy with horror elements supported by some cool action sequences." But in the end, he says "Everyone will just have to make up their own minds when they see it."

While telling its tale, THE BREED touches on issues of racism, prejudice, and the roles of men and women in western society. Fun touches are added by having the various suspects named after famous vampires in literature in film. Subplots that involve, among other things, a lab created virus that will kill vampires, adds to the distrust and tension between our two main protangonists. All this put together with an atmosphere of film noir creates a film both visually and mentally stimulating.

Memorable quotes

What is a Vampire? -
"They're a cell mutation of the human species - A different type of breed."
The Breed starring Adrian Paul

Human, Vampire...We're all the same:
"He has no motive."
"Something you learn tracking humans pal, sometimes being a
sick f**k is all the motive you need."

I'm not gonna make it that easy! The Breed starring Adrian Paul
Fleming: You're not James Bond. I'm not Blofeld.
No more explanations, and no last-minute escapes.

Boudreaux: Be gone! You deal with things far more then your comprehension.
Aaron Gray:He didn't just say that.
Lucy Westenra:Spare us the Anne Rice routine. We are not amused.

Movie trivia - did you know...

Lucy is asked if she has an alibi for 4.30am? "she proceeds show Steve Grant the nightclub stamp on her hand. The word written on Lucy's hand is 'Da' which is the stamp for the club Prada, but also means "Yes" in Russian, thus effectively answering his question.

Most of the vampires in the film are named after famous fictional vampires. For example, Bai Ling plays Lucy Westenra and there is also a character called Seward (both characters in Dracula). There is a Dr. Graf Orlock (Graf means Count, and Orlock is the name of the vampire in Nosferatu)

Adrian prefers to perform most of his own stunts. During the filming of the Breed there was an accident on the set, where Adrian was performing a "wire action" stunt and was accidentally dropped on his head, due to a language barrier with the Hungarian crew.

Aaron - fight scene

The film was shot in just 24 days

The scene with the body suspended and draining into a bucket, and the one of the mutilated body on the bed are a tribute to artist Joel-Peter Witkin who's art also inspired film's like The Cell. The first shot of Aaron Grey, standing in front of a mirror is a recreation of the surrealist painter Rene Magritte's painting.

The room where the mutilated body is found is a recreation of the office of Sigmund Freud, and there is a tribute to psychology and Freud through out the film: Dr. Orlock is a Freudian psychoanalyst... Rusco spouts stuff about identity... Aaron has a throwaway line about Steven's childhood trauma...
